Hold Repeal Meeting on June 14 in Washington

A county wide repeal support meeting will be held in Washington at 7 30 p m June 14 in the Washington High School auditorium. Rev Leonard P Jones of Muscatine will headline with other out of town speakers and delegates from Louisa and Jefferson counties. A booster trip to towns across the county is planned for June 16 with carloads of people and a volunteer band.

Mrs Telza Holmes 81 of Keota Dies After Stroke

Keota June 2 Mrs Telza Holmes 81 a longtime Keota resident died at her home after paralysis and a subsequent stroke She had lived in Keota over 35 years Her husband J L Holmes operated a grocery before his death in January 1908 She is survived by son George H Holmes and daughter Edith Teets both of Keota two granddaughters LaNor Holmes Turner and Lorena Teets O fletharty and two grandchildren Sara Jane and Austin Turner Funeral arrangements have not been made.

Death of M F Flaherty Prompts Chicago Move Note

A. Neiswanger reports the death of M F Flaherty of Chicago this morning. Flaherty once operated the Journal’s linotype in Washington and later worked in Chicago at a job printing plant before his illness. Funeral is planned for Monday. the Flaherty and Neiswanger families were longtime East Jefferson Street neighbors.

County sends ten to Ottumwa reforestation camp

Washington county completes its civilian conservation corps delegation with ten men to Ottumwa Monday. Frank R. Sage, chairman, lists the volunteers and asks for cars to transport the group, adding that squads to Ottumwa have previously relied on local drivers. The county quota was cut from 35 to 30, with ten already shipped and ten more sent earlier.

Farm Women Hear Mrs Richardson Address

Mrs Ellsworth Richardson of Albia delivered an effective address to farm bureau women on achievement day. A pageant by members and seven township exhibits, judged by Miss Frances Pew of Ames, drew about 100 attendees with a noon pot luck. Mrs Richardson highlighted organization and membership. she noted her Boston medal for distinguished service to agriculture, a rare honor among farm advocates.

Escaped convict Bechtel captured near Dripping Springs

June 2 report from Siloam Springs says life term fugitive Lewis Bechtel was captured alive near a farm at Dripping Springs by Deputy Floyd Glenn of Delaware County Arkansas. Bechtel offered no resistance as lawmen closed in on two accomplices amid a gunfight with a speeding truck. Eleven men escaped from Kansas State Prison Tuesday in a four state crime spree, firing at the truck in an attempted gasoline stop for a stolen car.

Roosevelt Seeks Republican For London Economic Conference

In Beverly Hills Mr. Roosevelt for six weeks hunted a Republican to place at the economic conference in London. He found Senator Jim Couzens of Detroit who admitted to Stagner with corn planting. Bribery seemed needed to recruit a writer for the party, and they depart with high hopes hoping to do more than greet the king during the address.

Fire Breaks Out Nearby Church During Sermon in Owensville

In Owensville Indiana the fire bell rang during a sermon on Hell by the Rev. D R Thomas. The congregation rushed out to find a residence a few doors from the church engulfed in flames. Frank Frazier has returned home from Excelsior Springs Missouri.

Over 100 Enrolled in Vacation Bible School

More than one hundred children have enrolled in the Union Daily Vacation Bible School with further signups at Sunday school. The program runs June 12 to 30 with classes for younger children at the United Presbyterian church and older kids at the Methodist church. Pupils attend at the Y swimming pool and transportation for rural children is being arranged, announced by general chairman Rev. D. C. Fulton.

Local Shriners to Meet Tuesday Night

A meeting of all the Shriners in this vicinity is called for next Tuesday evening at eight o'clock in the Masonic temple. They will consider attendance at the Des Moines ceremonial with the four Iowa Shrines. Kaaba temple Davenport plans a special train to Des Moines for the event if enough Washington Shriners go. A remarkably low fare for the round trip will prevail.

Frank Miles of Des Moines urged the 1933 Washington high school and junior college graduates to seize education opportunities. The two classes, 108 high school students and a large junior college cohort, filled the Methodist church as they heard a forceful address and witnessed a fine commencement program.
