Quad Cities crackdown nets 30 plus arrests
More than 30 Iowa and Illinois residents were arrested as 150 law enforcement officers began a crackdown on illegal firearms and drugs in the Quad Cities area. The action followed 110 indictments from a federal grand jury in Des Moines and county grand juries in Rock Island Illinois and Scott Iowa. Assistant U.S. Attorney John Fitzgibbons provided details.

Thieves Take $450 From Washington Station
A Washington service station Jim's Standard was hit early Wednesday by thieves who pried open the front door and a safe between 4 and 7 am. More than $400 came from the safe and cash tray, plus $40 from an outdoor ice vending machine. Police have no suspects but continue to investigate.

DES MOINES UPI The Hotel Fort Des Moines Iowa's largest hotel has been sold to John Graham and John and Edwin Hunter all of Des Moines. Terms were not disclosed and the sale will be effective Sept 1. Graham said a proposed new downtown Des Moines hotel four blocks away had nothing to do with the purchase.

Corning Imposes 30 Gallons Water Cap Citywide
Corning Iowa will cap personal water use at 30 gallons daily starting June 15 unless heavy rainfall arrives. Water Department superintendent Dick Cook said the typical resident uses about 41 gallons per day. A monetary penalty will be charged for every gallon above the limit.

Governor to call special session on state employee bargaining
Iowa Governor Robert D Ray announced he will reconvene the legislature before July 1 to act on state employee collective bargaining agreements that could cost up to 80 million dollars over two years. He noted three of four contracts settled by arbitration and warned the revenue outlook will drive any decision, as he also criticized the 1977 legislature for inaction on a gasoline tax, bottle deposits, and a weak land use bill.
