Roommates jailed in Washington County on drug charges
Two Wellman roommates Dennis Schauf 24 and Michael Martin 20 are jailed in Washington County on possession of a controlled substance marijuana with bonds set at 1500 each. Arresting officers could not comment. Also Wednesday night James P. Musack 37 of Iowa City was arrested in Riverside for allegedly assaulting a 16 year old and released on 100 bond.

Brothers die bury under corn on Iowa farm
Two brothers Dayton Schelsmidt 48 and Richard 28 died of suffocation when 800 bushels of shelled corn buried them while they tried to lift an overhead floor on the Dayton Schelsmidt farm six miles south of Lansing in Allamakee County. The father escaped injury. authorities reported the noon incident.

Infant dies after surgery to correct external heart
Levar Bordley, two months old from Trucksville, died in Philadelphia of a blood infection after an operation to place his heart inside his chest. Born March 31 with the heart outside his chest, he was transferred by helicopter from Wilkes-Barre General Hospital for the rare procedure at Children's Hospital.

Thieves target five area firms in two towns
City and county authorities investigate a rash of Wednesday night burglaries striking three businesses in Ainsworth and two in Washington. The Ainsworth Cafe, the Ainsworth Farmers' Co-op and the Shamrock Inn were entered forcibly with cash taken from jukeboxes and a cigarette machine, plus a safe at the co-op. In Washington, Baskin-Robbins and Messer's Shell Service were also broken into with undetermined cash removed. Deputies and the local marshal are on the case.
