Supervisors to Meet in June Sessions

The Washington County Board of Supervisors will hold the first of three June meetings on June 2 where claims will be allowed. A statutory meeting is set for June 13 at 9 30 a m. A third session occurs June 29 with claims again allowed.

Five killed in Missouri Interstate 57 crash

Five persons a woman a teenage boy and three younger children were killed and a man critically injured in a one car wreck on Interstate 57 in southeast Missouri. Sparks Funeral Home identified Terry L. Smith 17 of Collierville Tenn as a victim. Names of others not yet released. The car reportedly struck a bridge abutment near 6 am and it was unclear if all victims were related.

Thieves Steal Priceless Audubon Prints in Key West

In Key West Florida burglars entered the Audubon House over the weekend and stole a priceless collection of engraved prints of John James Audubon watercolors of American birds. Gerald Whaley of the Mitchell Wolfson Family Foundation called the theft a clever burglary or a break in with a possible key access.

Barn fire at David Bell farm near Washington

Washington Volunteer firemen answered a morning alarm from the David Bell farm about a mile south of Washington to extinguish a barn fire. The blaze started just before 10 a.m. and damaged a small amount of hay but did little damage to the structure as three fire units responded.

Carter eyes modest thaw in U S Cuba ties

President Carter, returning from a vacation, signaled possible progress with Cuba in coming weeks not including recognition. White House aides floated exchanging diplomatic representatives in neutral embassies and talks in New York on jailed Americans and family reunifications, with discussions described as very early.

Fire at Beverly Hills Club May Have Been Started by Smoking Waste

Southgate Kentucky reports busboy Walter Bailey recalled seeing a tablecloth catch fire from dropped ashtrays in a private Zebra Room. Coroner Dr. Fred Stine lowered the death toll to 158 with 19 still unidentified as investigators seek whether arson or an oil fueled generator caused the blaze at the Beverly Hills Supper Club, a Showplace of the Midwest hosting 3,500 visitors.

Conger House summer Sunday open with exhibits and music

Historic Conger House opens Sundays from 2 to 5 pm through October with a 3 pm musical program on June 5. Admission is free for 1977 members. Fresh exhibits include antique irons, a 1900s wood burning stove, bootmaking tools, period dresses, and new art in the gallery.

Mediation Sought by South Moluccan Gunmen in Netherlands

In Assen a government spokeswoman said South Moluccan gunmen holding about 60 hostages in a school and a train sought mediation for the first time nine days into the crisis. Talks would be considered by a crisis team as officials in The Hague monitor developments. The gunmen also demand the release of 21 prisoners and a plane to depart with them, but other demands were not discussed.

General Telephone seeks rehearing on Iowa rate ruling

General Telphone asked the Iowa State Commerce Commission to reexamine portions of its May 5 1977 rate increase ruling that granted about 25 percent of the October 1974 filing. R.E. Morgart said the company seeks higher earnings to fund service upgrades and attract capital. The rehearing request follows a district court appeal over 1974 decisions denying increases from a 1972 filing.

Transportation Group approves Vote higher inspection fees

The Iowa DOT Commission approved higher inspection rates effective after Aug 3 with a 6-1 vote led by Chairman Robert Rigler dissenting. Fees rise to 8 for autos, 11 for trucks, 5 for motorcycles while labor costs and private station losses drive the change. The panel also discussed evaluating driver education effectiveness with DOT and DPI collaboration to identify schools or instructors tied to accident involvement.
