In Tampa on June 1 two civilians Shal Pifer and H G McCray were killed and others wounded as a mob besieging Hillsborough county jail clashed with National Guard troops guarding B F Levins the confessed slayer of a father and two children. The mob earlier damaged the jail and lights were snuffed as guards used machine guns and ropes to contain the crowd.

Manila dispatch reports 108 missing after the Negros, a 280 ton inter island steamer, foundered 150 miles south of Manila during a typhoon. Captain and 100 passengers were among the missing while an officer saved 70 lives by loading 50 passengers and crew onto a lifeboat before the ship went down.
