Des Moines reports Mr and Mrs Richard C Hansen won the Iowa Farm Bureau 1975 outstanding young member award defeating 61 county entrants. They received the honor from Farm Bureau President J Merrill Anderson at a banquet in Newton.
A large crowd watched Iowa midwest entrants race souped-up tractors in a lively track pull. Judges noted the sport's growth from humble sleds to $30 000 machines and praised driver skill as crowds cheered for contenders from Nebraska and Kalona.
Iowa DEQ officials warn of a dangerous August with hot dry weather, low winds, and inversions likely to trigger air pollution advisories in major cities including Davenport. Dr. Edward Stanek says past data and current conditions point to a tough month unless weather patterns shift.
The Senate voted 50 to 44 to table a resolution disapproving President Ford's plan to phase out price controls on old oil over 39 months, a move that surprised some lawmakers and could have halted the proposal. Two unidentified men are being questioned by Des Moines Police in the slaying of 17 year old Geralyn Jean Kean. Her nude body was found-face down on a waterbed in the southside frame house by her husband. No charges. no murder weapon. motive unclear.
Montgomery Ward will convert its Washington store from retail to catalog operation in December with the closing set for December 24. Zone Manager W E Hill cited obsolescence of retail as the reason and said the company will relocate employees where possible. The 17 500 sq ft two story building will house the new catalog division, with repairs and the creed Satisfaction Guaranteed continuing.
Craig McCoy of the Crooked Creek Cyclones swept top honors in market swine and also won market sheep. Sanford Rugg of Chicagua Club was reserve champion in swine and showmanship. Eric Graber of the Cyclones won showmanship and top commercial gift. Waterloo reports no arrests after a Tuesday night disturbance injuring two, amid a 24 hour flare of violence.
