Iowa faces 50 percent rise in teaching vacancies

The Iowa State Education Association reports 3,870 vacancies from February to September 1965 across 364 districts, with 5,831 vacancies already sent to the ISEA this year. Johnson creates emergency board to delay TWU strike threat

President Johnson orders a new emergency board under the Railway Labor Act to avert a potential strike by the Transport Workers Union against American Airlines. The board has 30 days to propose settlements and another 30 days for negotiations, delaying any work stoppage for 60 days.

Speck indicted for eight murders in Illinois

Richard Speck, 24, was indicted by a Cook County grand jury on eight murder counts for the slayings of eight student nurses in a townhouse dormitory on July 14. The panel heard testimony from seven witnesses and found enough evidence to proceed to trial, with Speck told of the indictment during a brief jail visit by his public defender Gerald Getty.

Washington County Fair Opens Talent Show Amid Weather Delays

Rain Tuesday night shifted the Washington County 4H and FFA Fair program to start at 6 45 p m with a talent show sponsored by the Washington Kiwanis Club. A large array of acts is planned and winners may advance to KANT TV Des Moines. The parade of champions and 4H awards will follow. The Washington Municipal Band concert is canceled. Judging continues with baby beef and market pigs and lambs, naming champions and reserve titles for multiple 4H and FFA clubs.

Castro Attacks United States and Allies in Havana Speech

Cuban premier Fidel Castro, during a two and a half hour address on Moncada Day, denounced the United States, the Soviet Union, Chile, Brazil, and Argentina. He vowed to send combat units with equipment to Vietnam and praised Che Guevara and Ho Chi Minh. The address marked the 13th anniversary of the Moncada assault that sparked the 26th of July movement.

Senate OKs $2.06 Billion Economic Aid Bill in Arms Debate

Davenport Realtors Targeted Over Open Housing Fight

Davenport Iowa. The Davenport Catholic Interracial Council accuses the Davenport Board of Realtors and the Quad Cities Home Builders Association of opposing Title IV of the 1966 Civil Rights Act by running ads against open housing. Iowa Civil Rights Commission official James Thomas says a realtor is a public agent and could fall under the law, with conciliation pursued before any legal action if violations are found.

One Killed Five Hurt in Tiffin I 80 Crash

A two vehicle accident five miles east of Tiffin on Interstate 80 killed at least one person and injured five others Tuesday. The Iowa Highway Patrol said victim and injured names would not be released until next of kin is notified. The death raised 1966 Iowa highway fatalities to 412. Injured were taken to University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Scientists study nuclear rocket to divert asteroid Icarus

Sydney University physicist Prof Stuart Butler says the US Britain and Russia are exploring landing a rocket on Icarus to destroy it with a nuclear warhead. He warns a slight orbital deviation could send the asteroid toward Earth and devastate major cities. Icarus is about a mile wide and would pass within four million miles of Earth in June 1968.

Planes strike North Viet Nam depots as losses mount

U S air and naval strikes hit oil storage depots and ammunition dumps in North Vietnam. Two planes were lost with three airmen rescued, including a pilot on his 100th mission. Viet Cong attacks near Cu Chi and Soc Trang followed the Hastings defeat, while a bomber crew rescued after a downing near Dong Hoi.
