The county fair ends this evening with the livestock division auction on the premises by English River Pellets. Journal photographer Tom Kane captures the moment as bidders compete at the close of the event.
George Kiefer of Riverside won the grand champion Angus with a 1 170 pound animal selling for 544.05 dollars at the Washington County 4H and FFA Fair auction. English River Pellets Ka tona paid 46.50 per cwt for the top bid. Reserve grand champion Angus sold to Hy-Vee Grocery for 33 per cwt. Doug Greine showed the 1 020 pound animal. Attendance 4 200. program included talent show parade of champions awards free barbecue and horse show with a dance tonight.
The report details Operation Hastings as the largest Marine campaign in Viet Nam up to date with U S casualties rising to 4440 combat deaths. Marines called in air and artillery strikes near the Laos border killing scores of North Vietnamese. Air sorties topped 542 with strikes against Viet Cong and oil depots near Haiphong. No Marine casualties were reported.

Four members of a Cambridge Iowa family died and two were injured when a semi trailer truck driven by John Wardle veered into the median on Interstate 35 near the U S 30 underpass and fell onto their vehicle. Wardle and another occupant were hospitalized. Separate crash near Solon killed Louis Cox 17. Injured were Diane Looney 16 Gerry Herdliski 16 and Patricia Meyer 18. Iowa traffic toll for 1966 rose to 418 with these deaths.
North Vietnamese officials protested to the Inter Control Commission over Ky's invasion comments and accused U S planes of bombing the demarcation line and spraying toxic chemicals in South Viet Nam. Hanoi alleged heavy losses for U S and South Vietnamese forces and claimed a U S plane was shot down over Quang Binh province, while a State Department spokesman reiterated there is no desire for a wider war.
FBI and postal authorities search for Emery Angelo 50 after a Sioux City star route truck was found with more than 37000 in coins missing from its mailbag. The truck left Norfolk Nebraska en route to Sioux City and was later found with coins and cash missing from bags slit open.
Washington based FBI data show Iowa's 1965 crime rate under the national average across seven categories. Iowa logged 706.5 offenses per 100000, vs 1434.3 nationwide, with specific figures including 36 murders, 123 rapes, 354 robberies, 554 aggravated assaults, 8398 burglaries, 7144 larcenies of $50+, and 2889 autos stolen.
Sixty nine couples from at least ten states were wed by Rev. Robert Truesdell in Las Vegas, with many from California. He operated a strip chapel and performed weddings without proper state certification. his license had not been renewed as of July 1, and the marriages may be invalid.

Seventy five members of the 2nd Ordnance Company in Wa shington will depart next weekend for two weeks of summer training at Camp McCoy Wisconsin. An advance party leaves Thursday and Friday to prepare for the regular contingent. The main body will depart August 31 with a separate group of new members already left a week early for special combat training. Training ends August 14 for the regular unit.
A U S Air Force pilot reports spotting a flashing S O S on rocks in North Vietnam and aids the rescue of Navy Lt. Dieter Dengler, the escaped prisoner who reached safety with Air Force colleagues. The mission used a Jolly Green Giant helicopter to hoist Dengler from a riverbed after he survived harsh terrain and injuries.
