Darla K Gepfert four year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Alvin Gepfert of Bellevue died at home Monday night from effects of a rattlesnake bite suffered while playing with other children in the farm yard. A doctor was called too late to save her.
Waterloo authorities Issued alerts for Laverna Staley 15 daughter of Mr and Mrs John Staley of Waterloo and Mrs Lillian Cameron of Cedar Falls both missing since June. Staley described as blue eyed blonde five feet tall weighing 98 pounds, last seen in a red and white striped dress. Cameron disappeared June 9 after leaving home for a shopping trip to Waterloo.

The War Salvage Committee for Washington announces two paper recycling bins at the northeast and southwest corners of the city square beside the park. It urges residents and businesses in Washington County to deposit newspapers magazines and cardboard regularly to support war relief efforts.
Iowa corn prospects fade as cool July nights slow growth. After a wet start in June, weather has shifted to cool nights with uneven rain, retarding later planted corn. Early corn tassels and ears are progressing, but overall crops look less favorable for 1944.
Waterloo County Attorney files improper disposition of a body charge against 22 year old Margaret Lillian Camarata of Cedar Falls. Dr T F Thornton testified she admitted giving birth to a child in a friend's home and killing it. Bond set at $2000. case to be presented to the grand jury in September.
Gov Bourk Bourk Hickenlooper disclosed protests from the American Bankers Association and the Iowa Bankers Association against proposed commutations for life prisoners in late penal institutions. Hearings on 16 proposed commutations, 12 involving bank robbers, are set in the governor's office. The ABA opposes three men in the Clinton robbery of 1932 and the state association objects to all 12 cases.
Daily bond receipts show only 225 added today, keeping Washington County 74th among 99 in the state and far from the $27,740 deficit. With only three days left to purchase and have credits counted by July 31, the county risks missing the fifth war loan target.
Mrs. W Dale Holland and her daughter Janet left for Philadelphia after spending weeks with Mr and Mrs William Beal and Holland relatives. Jean Holland chose to extend her stay while Mr Holland had returned home recently from his vacation here.

The speeches will be broadcast from WHO radio and Shrine Auditorium with Mitchell from 11:30 to 12:00 and Wallace from 2:30 to 2:45 p.m. The event opens at 11:00 a.m. at the Shrine Auditorium.

American air units join the offensive from bases inside Russia, claiming 38 German planes shot down. Deblin lies 66 miles southeast of Warsaw as battles rage around Lwow and Sledice.
Bernard E Swift died at Fort Des Moines hospital from injuries in a Monday morning bus car crash north of Des Moines. He was in critical condition after a blood transfusion and surgery for internal injuries. Arylus Larson, 17, also in the car, remains in critical condition with a fractured skull and unconscious. Funeral services are being held.
Beginning August first the second allotment of canning sugar may be issued. Consumers who missed the first period may request the full amount, while those who already received the initial 10 pounds per person will apply for another 10 pounds. Applications must be completed on both sides with no stamps required.
Private Bernard Erwin Swift 23 died after a crash while being taken to the army air base at Sioux Falls S D following furlough in Des Moines. He was born Oct 19 1920 in the community and attended Washington High School. He is survived by his parents five miles southeast of Washington twelve siblings and two brothers in the army. Funeral arrangements are by L A Jones funeral home awaiting word from siblings.

The British 8th army pushed up to eight miles from Florence as armored spearheads cut toward the city on a broad front south and southeast of Florence. American troops held along the Arno to prepare a climactic assault on Pisa while New Zealand units moved toward San Casciano.
Lt. McCaleb, a Piper Cub pilot with the Ainsworth unit, writes from England to his mother that he received shell fragments in his right thigh but expects a quick return to Normandy. He mentions a recent promotion to first lieutenant and explains his hospital status.
McCaleb, a senior at Iowa State College in Ames, received the Air Medal and Purple Heart. Harry Burmeister learned that his grandson Jack Garber, from Des Moines, was injured on duty in Saipan and has been taken to a hospital at Pearl Harbor after serving in the Marine Corps amphibious division.
Newcomer Ernie Miller arrives in Washington from Sioux Falls to take the role of assistant manager at the Montgomery Ward store. He has about ten years with Ward, is from Devils Lake North Dakota, and is married with two children Rodney and Carrol. The Millers plan to relocate to 952 South Iowa Avenue in two weeks. Miller enjoys sports as his chief hobby.
