Britain and Germany claim victories in air and sea battles and a Des Moines column notes U S Mail to Europe. Iowa readers who mailed letters to European countries June 3 to June 7 may not receive replies as the Belgian steamer Ville de Namur carrying that mail sank June 19, Postmaster L S Hill reports.
Thomas Soppeland of Vincent, 33, a lineman for Central States Electric Co., was seriously burned contacting a 6600 volt line while installing a transformer on a farm line. Physicians said he will recover.
Des Moines attorney Paul H Cunningham won the Republican nomination in Iowa's sixth district after an eight and a half hour battle, taking the prize on the tenth ballot. A former state representative from Polk County and a World War veteran, he was the second high man in the June 3 primary.
Cedar Rapids authorities search for Mrs. Margaret Hathaway 21 of Manchester mother of a six month old baby. She vanished July 18 from Greene Square after her husband briefly left her alone as her father-in-law Sam York of Manchester urged action.
Roy Taylor, a Cameron Missouri farm worker, was injured at Edmund Orr farm south of Le Mars when wagon wheels ran over his face and body, breaking his jaw shoulder blade and collar bone.
James Templer a 23 year old farm hand suffered serious burns when friction from a threshing belt ignited oats on the Carl Hendrickson farm near Kamrar. A driven team panicked and spread flames across about 20 acres, destroying the thresher and tractor as workers tried to stop the horses.
Ralph Potters and his wife from Fort Scott Kansas reported being kidnapped July 23 by two armed men who forced them to drive to Mt Ayr Iowa. The abductors are linked to recent robberies in Fairfield Mt Union and Burlington and to a local Sinclair station break in. Potters 20 and his wife 17 said they were threatened with death and forced to drive.
Mrs Loyd Bradshaw aged 38 died at 6 30 pm yesterday in Washington county hospital after weeks of ill health. Burial sera will be held Sunday at 2 pm in Hartford Missouri. Survived by husband Loyd six children and extended family.
John K. Valentine the Democratic candidate for governor will deliver the keynote address at the Democratic state convention in Des Moines on July 31. Secretary Henry A. Wallace will not attend as he plans to return to Iowa in August to deliver his acceptance speech. Edward Breen of Fort Dodge is named as permanent chairman candidate by Valentine.
A young Kansas couple in a car was left alone as bandits fled in a second vehicle, prompting a police investigation into the daylight robbery and the attackers' escape route.
Sixty four club members parents and friends joined the first 4 H dairy calf tour in the county traveling from the A L Duensing farm north of Washington to the Lyle Fessler farm southwest of Riverside. They judged Guernsey Holstein and Aryshire stock at three farms and held a noon picnic in Sunset park.
Donald Wilson Little, 25, has enlisted in the United States Navy and will report to the naval training station at Great Lakes Illinois near Chicago on July 30. He is the son of Mrs. Nina P. Little of 1011 North Marion Avenue Washington.

A thunderstorm drenched Grundy Center Iowa with 4.36 inches of rain in 12 hours ending at 9 30 this morning. The temperature fell to 65 degrees as the storm moved through town.
Des Moines reports cooling trend after a stretch of 100 plus degree days. Rain arrives in northern Iowa with Cedar River region soaking amounts, while deaths from heat reach at least two more, including Herman Ehlers and Henry Newhouse. Highs reached 108 in several cities with unofficial 110 at Williamsburg.
President Roosevelt indicated Henry A. Wallace will withdraw from the cabinet when he begins his active campaign this fall. The president suggested a leave of absence is possible rather than resignation, echoing Roosevelt’s 1920 move to campaign for vice president.
Cecil Lee aged 33 of Low Moor and his daughter Lavonne, 14, drowned at Brophy's Creek between Clinton and DeWitt while picnicking. Lavonne went under while wading with a cousin and Lee died trying to rescue her. Mrs Lee and three sons survive the tragedy, ninth such Iowa drowning of 1940.
