W. R. Yard of Webster City was re-elected president of the Iowa Baptist assembly as the meeting neared its end on Friday. Other officers were also re-elected. A vacancy for treasurer, created by H. N. Kruse of Algona’s death, will be filled later.
Police hunted a suspect who laid two railroad ties on the North Western railroad main line. The ties were removed from the tracks by F. E. Glaze, a railroad employee, shortly before a passenger train was due to arrive.
Residents pleaded at Ottumwa city hall for fire protection in Central addition and nearby areas lacking water mains. They cited a deadly Joseph Gee home fire and urged action by the water works board.
Francis Lin Nenkamp Harper, a tenant farmer, won Keokuk county’s plowing contest held during Yen-rou-gis celebrations that drew about 1500 spectators. Ward Fritchem took first in the boys division. County victors advance to the Corn Belt plowing match near Boone.
A one month old infant, Dwane Chesser, died after his head became lodged between a mattress and bed post while playing on a bed with his two year old brother Keith. His mother, while washing clothes, found the child in distress and carried him to neighbor J. T. Markenholozs home where artificial respiration failed.
The Iowa state banking department said deposits in Iowa state banks fell by 8.316 million in the quarter ending June 30 1940 while total deposits stood at 438.923 million and reserves reached 486.873 million. The drop was described as seasonal with farmers' funds moved to seed and crop operations, contrasting March when money stayed in stock markets and banks.
Iowa Supreme Court asked to appoint an outside judge to hear ouster proceedings next Wednesday in Fort Dodge against two Webster county supervisors J P Sullivan and F A McHaley. Five farmers brought the case charging overspending of the board's secondary road maintenance fund by 867000 dollars over the last four years.
In Des Moines Municipal Court Judge Edwin Moore sentenced Olive Mae Lewis, 39, to 15 days in jail after he labeled her testimony about a minor traffic offense as an out and out falsehood. She was accused of failing to yield in an accident involving her car and a trolley bus, with police testifying she had been drinking.
At Lincoln and Stewart playgrounds a pet show and freckles contest will award prizes for the most freckles and best dolls and pets. Judges with magnifying glasses will evaluate contestants. Registration reached 446 children with 285 at Lincoln and 161 at Stewart. The event runs through August 9 amid hot weather affecting softball schedules.
Merle Miller aged 13 was struck by lightning yesterday evening about 6 15 at his parents home six miles north of town while rinsing milk buckets on a windmill platform. He is resting quietly and feeling all right with no serious injuries to himself or his mother present.
A United Press report claims German high command sunk over 100,000 tons of British shipping and the destroyer Whirlwind, with raids on England Scotland and oil tanks. Britain calls up 300,000 more men and may raise ages to 37 as draft measures widen, amid warnings from Dutch Nazi officials.
A special meeting approved a patriotic pageant titled America on Parade to be staged during Festh the first week of October. The John B. Rogers company of Fostoria Ohio will present the show with an episode on corn history. It will run on two evenings with a third evening set for a special program. The pageant committee will be named later by Chairman Carl W Klein.
The House Military Affairs Committee decided to invite Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson to testify on the Burke Wadsworth compulsory military training bill. The measure would require the registration of about 42 million men aged 18 to 64 for military or home defense training, and action in the House will be delayed beyond Tuesday.

Yesterday afternoon firefighters were called to the Fred Kolesick home in the northeast part of town but found no blaze when they arrived. The incident was a minor flare up with no damage reported.
George H. Fields, longtime principal of Washington high school, accepts the Boise Idaho high school principalship. His departure will be felt by the school system and patrons. Boise, a city over 20 000 population, offers advancement for Fields and the town. Fields came from West Waterloo high school. he and Mrs. Fields are popular here with children Dick and Ann.
President Roosevelt signed an executive order to set up a fifty million dollar relief fund for war refugees. Secretary Wallace and Secretary Morgenthau were named to coordinate with the American Red Cross to obtain agricultural and other supplies for refugees driven from homes by hostilities. The fund is part of an amendment to the 1941 emergency relief act.
Des Moines residents conducted a thermometer experiment in a cucumber patch. The tested cucumber showed a temperature of 97.2 degrees while 198 degrees was noted as the ambient. The crop data indicate large annual cucumber production and storage for fresh sales and pickling.
Evangelist C. L. Vories continues expounding Revelation in the Voice of Prophecy auditorium at West Madison and South Avenue D. Meetings are every night except Monday. A son, Merle, into a daze, wandered away and was found to be partially paralyzed on one side but a local physician predicted no lasting injury after rest.
Rainfall totaling up to eight inches swept across Iowa ending a blistering heat wave. Washington county reported 1.90 inches, with general rain reviving corn and pastures. Utilities crews repaired wind and lightning damage while rail lines suffered washouts in northeast Iowa.

Two men tied to a Fort Scott kidnapping robbed a Linwood filling station for $10, fleeing west on Highway 61 in a gray Wisconsin plated car. They had earlier abducted a youthful couple at Fort Scott and staged holdups in Mt. Ayr Mt. Union Fairfield and Burlington. A woman was with them.
Mrs Lucina A Wheatley aged 87 died yesterday at four o'clock at her son's home 62 North Marion avenue Washington trip four weeks death due to age. She leaves six sons and one sister. Funeral in Atlantic Iowa with L A Jones Funeral Home in charge.
