Governor Wilson promises relief from extreme heat and issues invitations for a farm conference set for August 5. The dispatch notes a publicity stunt where rodeo performer Peaches Nelson delivered a summons to the governor in Des Moines. In Council Bluffs, an explosion injures three after dry ice used to clean a sand point vents violently.
Lowell Strike, 17, of Marshalltown died from exposure after an accident while swimming in a sandpit near Marshalltown. Two younger companions brought him to the surface after a minute underwater. Police used an inhalator before he was taken to the hospital.
An explosion at the Jay Standard service station in south Ottumwa destroyed the building. Oil spilled and fire spread, but firefighters prevented the blaze from reaching gasoline tanks. Donald Root, 12, received a minor scalp wound. Virgil Nickerson, the station manager, said fumes may have been ignited by a basement pressure pump during cleaning.
Dubuque eviction notices filed with Justice T M Barrett threaten a man, his wife and seven children, a second family of six, and a woman with four children. With husbands in hospital, families lack housing and may occupy box cars as temporary homes while awaiting court action.
Dr. Fred Alexander head of history at the University of Western Australia is named to speak at the State University of Iowa August convocation. He will discuss An Australian Looks at the America of 1940. More than 450 degrees and certificates will be granted.
In Clinton crowds face swarming shad flies over the Mississippi. Bridge platforms became slick as Glenn Darling of Cozad Nebraska lost control of his truck, slid into a hydrant and sign, and wrecked against a curb. Five hundred pool bathers deserted the municipal pool as flies coated its surface and Riverview park ball games were canceled.
Mrs Edwin T Meredith widow of a former secretary of agriculture declares she is happy to join Democrats in support of Wendell Willkie. Her husband founded Meredith Publishing Co known for Successful Farming and Better Homes and Gardens.
Wendell L. Willkie, Republican presidential candidate, will meet August 5 in Des Moines with representatives from nine states Minnesota South Dakota Nebraska Illinois Wisconsin Colorado Iowa Kansas Missouri. Governor George A. Wilson announced the closed conference runs 9 am to noon followed by a press briefing and a public address from the state house steps. A luncheon at 1 pm will include Republican county chairmen and vice chairmen from all 99 Iowa counties.
City council approved paying a portion of the pavement contract for two blocks of South Second Avenue from East Washington to East Jefferson. The state highway commission will advertise bids next Monday with bids opened August 13, funding covers seven feet of concrete on each side and portions of intersections and alley approaches as part of primary roads 92 and 1.
A party of eleven Washington men drove to Muscatine and returned in the giant all metal Trimor-Ford aircraft. The trip was organized through Phillips 66 Dealers Carr's Maker Mace Motor Company Martin's Modern Cleaners and the Maid-Rite Sandwich shop. Passengers included Sherm Gault Bill Kendrick Arnold Carr Jack Pauls George Pauls Clint Burke Carl Koehler Bill Shannon Vernon Richardson William Barth. The pilot was Sam Tolley Betty.
The Lincoln school board elected Mrs Deasie Hoffert of Manchester to replace Marion Cover who resigned after being re elected. Hoffert, widowed with a nine year old son, holds a BA in kindergarten primary from Iowa State Teachers College and has taught in Yarmouth Wapello and Onawa. The board noted broader use of teachers with college degrees in lower elementary grades. Also accepted was the resignation of Grace Randall from the home making course at Washington high school to take a higher paying post in Grinnell Iowa.
President Roosevelt extends the export licensing system, effectively an embargo on petroleum and scrap iron and other scrap metal. Acting under authority to control munitions and essential war materials, he revises two proclamations to cover oil and scrap metal with no specific reasons given. The move follows disclosure that oil shipments from American tankers to distant ports outside the western hemisphere were halted.
Mae Hamer, daughter of the plane owner, accompanies the flight. The aircraft will be at Kendrick's field, west of Washington, today and tomorrow to take up passengers.

Ira L. Nordyke 60 died early today at Washington County hospital after emergency appendectomy. Born Feb 17 1880 in Washington county near Brighton he moved to Ainsworth 1924 bought Standard Oil station later added grocery. Survived by wife Cassie M. Davison son Ray and two grandsons. Funeral 2 pm Saturday at Ainsworth Methodist Church with Rev R C Keagy. burial Hillcrest Brighton. L A Jones Washington funeral home in charge.
Secretary Henry A. Wallace conferred with President Roosevelt on strategy for the third term campaign and said he would stay in the cabinet at least until his vice presidential nomination is officially announced around August 20.
Mrs Goldie Vinton filed a replevin action in Justice of the Peace J E Bovee to secure title to a building used as garage and residence in the northeast part of town. Noel defaulted, and the plaintiff won. The building now sits on a lot owned by Mel Crandall.
The White House announced today that Johnson has resigned his position in the War Department leading to swift changes in the administration.
An allotment of 400 is set for prizes in the Washington Festicorn corn show to be held next October. A corn show committee led by County Agent J W Chandler will divide prizes into multiple classes with 20 dollars per class, requiring at least ten entries per class. Territory is limited to Washington county and surrounding townships, with two exceptions for red and calico corn.
The Iowa Daily Press Association reports Prof. K. A. Moyer of Iowa State College urged the legislature to revise Iowa speed laws to establish prima facie speeds of 60 mph in the day and 50 mph at night. He favors zoning speeds on curves and built up areas and cites Minnesota as a model for easier enforcement and safer roadways.
Buel A. Williamson, manager of the Social Security field offices in Iowa City, says a representative will be in Washington this Friday, July 26, at the post office to discuss the old age and survivors insurance program with interested persons.

A Washington seed man urges farmers to wait for rain before threshing timothy grain. Under the Federal Seed Act, hulled timothy will be docked 25 cents per 100 pounds, so delaying threshing protects quality and price.

London reports German forces sank the liner Lancastria off St Nazaire on June 16 with about 1,700 civilians and troops lost and 2,832 still missing. The 6,127 ton Meknes was sunk off southern England with about 390 lives lost.
Phyllis Otto of Atlantic high school girl athlete retained her lead by winning again in a Des Moines tournament on July 25. The result continued Otto's streak in the girls competition, marking another victory in the ongoing event.
Des Moines reports a shift in weather as a mass of cool air moves down from the north promising at least a ten degree drop by tomorrow morning. The heat wave has killed 15 in Iowa, with drowning and prostration among the fatalities after days of temperatures above 100. Cecil Lee, 33, and his daughter Lavonne, 14, died in Brophy's Creek near DeWitt and Clinton.
Last night a window was broken at the Sin clair station toilet on North Marion avenue near Whittaker yard and a few pennies plus two bottles of pop were stolen. A likely suspect then aimed at the Standard CW station at Ainsworth run by Blaine Hawkins, shattering another window. Witnesses heard the break and the perpetrator fled in a car.
Des Moines reports Ivan Sullivan and Lowe Hinenze confessed to taking part in a failed Fort Madison prison breakout on July 8 that killed a convict and a guard. They also described a June 22 escape with Forrest Estes, a bank robbery at Diller Nebraska, and capture last week. Authorities plan first degree murder charges if convicted, with possible execution.
