A Grinnell obituary notes Jacob Niemants, 60, farmer, died here of spotted fever from a tick bite, survived by wife, three sons and two daughters. In Creston, Theresa Ann Moran found a bloodstone ring lost 12 years ago by her brother F. R. Moran now in Oklahoma City.
Joseph L. Potter, nine year instructor in the State University of Iowa College of Engineering, resigns to join Rutgers University electrical engineering department in New Brunswick New Jersey. He will leave Iowa City in August.
Mrs. R. E. Jones of Unionville, a hospital patient in Ottumwa, is suffering from Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
Mrs. Gerald Rea of three miles east of Sidney was severely injured when a heavy steel tractor wheel fell on her back while she and her husband changed it. She was taken to Hamburg hospital for treatment.
The Iowa Board of Control named Lulu B. Swisher of Leon and Mildred Bogan Fowle of Iowa Falls as parole agents for Mitchellville training school. They replace Ed L. Danforth of Winterset and Alta M. Thiede of Storm Lake, both Republicans.
J. Gillett, 30, recounts rapid return of vision after July 2 episode. He described waking to dim vision then within an hour seeing clearly again. Doctors attributed temporary blindness to optic nerve inflammation from eyestrain while driving a gravel truck.
Lloyd Carr of Maquoketa and John Peter of Superior faced Judge T G Garfield in Webster City district court. After pleading guilty they were sentenced to up to ten years in the Anamosa reformatory, with Lloyd Karr acting as defense counsel.
Des Moines report says Judge Utterback from his sickbed names Mark Reno as executive secretary and authorizes him to act for the national committeeman in matters of interest. Reno says he is merely acting as office boy for the judge.
Northwestern Bell Telephone Co announces a $700,000 program in Council Bluffs to install dial service. Local manager J. W. MacLafferty says the project includes locating the southwestern Town toll circuit headquarters in Council Bluffs and constructing a new two story building to house the dial equipment.
Merle F. Zickefoose, 33, is chosen by the West Des Moines school board to lead the new grade school starting in September. Salary set at 1450 dollars annually by Superintendent H. W. Fearing. The district completes a 109000 dollar grade school with a 49000 dollar federal grant. Longfellow and Lincoln will be abandoned.
A King's Cross subway explosion attributed to the Irish Republican Army injured fourteen people. The attack coincides with a government push for anti-terrorist legislation as suspects flee toward Ireland amid the bill’s likely passage next week.
President Roosevelt to day nominated Assistant Secretary of State Francis B. Sayre as Chief Commissioner of the Philippines. Sayre will replace Paul V. McNutt, who resigns to head the new federal welfare agency. Sayre has been a key figure in Hull's reciprocal trade treaty program.
Three Alabama National Guard soldiers were killed when their plane crashed and burned at Keystone, Pla while on an observation flight from Camp Foster. Advices reached state military headquarters in Montgomery, Alabama, noting the tragedy occurred today.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Logan and their children Betty Joyge and Hob returned from a week with Mrs Logan's parents Mr and Mrs B L Helmer in Hawkeye.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee postponed action on a proposal to back abrogation of the Japan United States commercial treaty. Chairman Key Pittman said no timing for action is clear as members seek more study of the far eastern situation. Unofficial polls show a committee majority in favor of the resolution.
Jacy Russell, once a singing cowboy from Oklahoma, was indicted by a federal grand jury for the kidnaping murder of Billy Scott Hamilton. Hamilton was found shot and beaten to death July 14 near Solon Michigan after being abducted in Pittsburg Kansas to help Russell flee from McAlester Oklahoma prison. Conviction under the Lindbergh Act could yield the death penalty.
Clarence E. Hammer, 71, a farmer from Newton, died of a heart attack while bailing straw. He collapsed from a straw load as heat and overexertion were cited by the coroner, Ralph Toland. Hammer had lived on the same Newton farm since birth.
The Iowa Taxpayers Association says 23 districts hold excessive general funds totaling 239,947 dollars, over 78 percent of estimated yearly expenditures, with only 925 dollars planned for tax relief. Another 57 districts report 693,303 dollars in balances, about 63 percent of 1,303,349 dollars in proposed 1939-40 spending, of which 224,169 dollars would cut taxes.
Secretary of State Cor dell Hull warned that the world armament race, especially in Europe, will continue indefinitely and seriously affect the United States domestic economy and general business. Berlin reports German army officers will attend maneuvers near the Po Valley in August amid tensions over France and Italy. Virginio Gayda editorialized that Italy would back Germany immediately if Danzig or similar triggers start a war, promising Italian opposition to British naval moves in the Mediterranean.

Funeral services for Jo T Miller of Rubio, reported dead yesterday, will be held at the Rubio church Friday afternoon at 1 30. Burial will follow in Hayesville cemetery.
A historic pageant depicts Washingtons pioneer school era from Miss Polly Ashbys one room log school to the later college phase. Mrs William Moon aughy portrays Polly Ashby as students Paul Brock David Brock and others act as bucolic pupils while visitors are played by Mrs Julia Cavender and Mrs E Plumly.
Nearly fifty dollars more was reported for the illuminated fountain fund by J. B. Lemmon and Mrs. F. E. Reid. The largest single gift came from an Iowa Southern Utilities employee who contributed 43.50, with sixty four people participating. Many smaller gifts followed, and sales of souvenirs by the Fortnightly Club added 47.46.

Mr and Mrs Lloyd Netewane and son David plan a Yellowstone and Colorado trip ending in Amarillo Texas. Mr and Mrs A F Hall and Mr and Mrs Joe Johnson of Winfield depart for an eastern journey visiting New England states Washington DC and Mammoth Cave. Dorothy Watson returns from ten days in Iowa City with sister Evelyn Watson and sister-in-law Mire.
Justice M Proctor of the District of Columbia federal court dismissed the government's anti trust cases against the American Medical Association and other medical groups. He ruled medicine is a profession and Sherman law does not apply to it, sustaining the AMA's demurrer and likely ending the case unless a higher court reverses.
Washington Whisker club announces a six coach train with dining car will park near North Iowa Avenue next Sunday morning for members to board without using Rock Island station. Train departs Washington at seven and reaches Chicago by 12 15 with 231 members signed for the Cub Giants game trip.
Moscow reports an aerial clash after which Japan allegedly lost 77 planes while 20 Soviet aircraft did not return. The communique says Japan massed forces on the outer Mongolian frontier amid the engagement.
Reports state Japan began sealing Chinese and some foreigners in Canton as the Pearl River blockade deadline nears. Tokyo ruler reported no full blockade yet at the British concession in Guangzhou while Hong Kong and Canton remain the focus of the enforcement.
A Crawfordsville booster trip to Columbus Junction was announced with plans for a band concert and a dance later at the water reservoir on North FP avenue. The event aims to allow residents to travel back after the Columbus Junction visit tonight.
