In Spencer the Clarence D Eaton shoe store at Dickens was robbed of 35 pairs of shoes over the weekend. The thief pried a side door and also stole harness from a repair shop nearby.
More people than ever before have applied for degrees at the summer session convocation at the University of Iowa on August 4. Prof. F. G. Higbee, director of convocation, announced that there are now 484 applications on file.
OSKALOOSA William Schip pers of Reasner is in Mercy hospital here with serious injuries after a cow kicked him in the abdomen while he tried to remove a tin can fastened to the cow’s foot.
American Legion sponsored a benefit floor show and a “battle of music” at Electric Park ballroom after a downtown parade. Proceeds aid sending the Legion drum and bugle corps to state and national conventions.
Tama Edward Kapayou, a five month old boy, smiles as he assists his mother Fan nie Kapayou at the Tama reservation selling baskets bead work and other souvenirs to travelers despite the heat.
Dr. F M McCluskey, Glenwood dentist and civic leader, was freed of charges after pulling up petunias on Mills County courthouse lawn. Justice J McPherron dismissed the complaint as prosecutors offered no testimony proving any value of the flowers.
Gail Sage, 21, was en route to join his two brothers, John and Harry, both jailed in Anamosa reformatory. District Judge Frank Bechly sentenced Sage to 10 years for breaking and entering after being caught in an empty building. John Sage serves time for shooting his wife and Harry Sage for stealing a car.
Black Hawk county board evacuated the William Mullen quarry south of Waterloo after district court rejected a suit for a temporary injunction to restrain Cedar Rapids Materials & Construction Co from taking rock. The Cedar Rapids company offered to share the quarry, but supervisors refused.
Sioux City council approves purchasing the old post office building from the federal government for 35000 dollars. A down payment of 1750 was made last year and action was deferred due to legal issues. The three stone structure is planned for remodeling into a new city hall.
Iowa public safety commissioner Karl Fischer urged clearing highways of unsafe jaloppies. He favored legislation at the next session to impose high taxes on very old cars that create traffic hazards, noting past taxes were too low.
Dr Hender of Des Moines was named president of the Chiropractic Society of Iowa at the annual convention. Dr F Humphrey of Atlantic was chosen vice president to succeed Dr R A Hender of Kalona, and Dr C J Christensen of DeWitt was re elected secretary treasurer.
George J. Keller announces closure of WPA construction projects in 18 Iowa counties from August 1 to October 15, risking at least 714 worker dismissals due to reduced appropriations. The 18 months rule may render many workers ineligible, with a 30 day layoff for those employed that long. Iowa WPA payroll July 19 stood at 24,180, expected to drop to 21,750 by August 1.

Mr and Mrs Gilbert Layton of Washington DC arrived Sunday for a two week visit with Mr and Mrs Louis Baird and E A Layton. Mrs Layton had previously visited her parents Mr and Mrs Oscar Haney and her brothers at McComb and Plymouth Alabama. Layton is a second lieutenant in the US reserve officers and served as instructor at Ft Belvoir Virginia for the C M T C camp during his two weeks at camp.
Centennial booster committee chairman Glenn Holden released the schedule for Wednesday and Thursday evening trips. On Wednesday the group will go to Crawfordsville and Columbus Junction with bands performing. meet at Central Park at 7:00 and report downtown first. Thursday heads to Brighton and Fairfield with the Municipal Band, same Central Park meeting, costumes and sunbonnets urged for good will.
Viscount Samuel urged in the House of Commons that Great Britain reopen the question of war debt payments to the United States. Edward McCutchen is spending several weeks in Cody, Wyoming, with his brother Aller, supervisor of Shoshone Falls, and will return by late August.

Work to sod slopes from the upper street and track level to the North Second avenue underpass is set to begin after concrete works. The state highway commission plans to award a $750 contract for sodding based on bids. The Maseman Construction Co. completes its underpass job this week and shifts crews to a bridge project near Knoxville, Iowa.

Frank Adam Libe 61 a prominent Washington county farmer died early this morning at Washington county hospital after a fifteen month illness. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 PM at L A Jones funeral home conducted by Rev Arthur Atack. He was born Feb 18 1888 in Washington county son of William and Mary Libe. He married Denisie White Feb 18 1902 and is survived by his wife a son Maurice his father William and a brother Karl all of Washington.
Laird Hawkins started a three month jail term for operating an automobile while intoxicated. Convicted in December and upheld on appeal by the supreme court, the sentence began after official papers reached the county clerk. Illary presented gifts at Marsh funeral home. burial will be at Keota Cemetery.
The 240 British warplanes returning from a training flight over France faced a French intercept as air alarms sounded to guide the fighters. Separately Britain offered Poland export credits up to 40 million dollars to buy defense material, announced by Sir John Simon in Parliament.
Mr. and Mrs. Russel Smith of Fairfield were in a car that turned over in a ditch on the road between Brighton and Pleasant Plain on the county line. Mrs. Smith suffered a broken leg and both were treated at Jefferson County Hospital. Dr. M L McCreedy assisted and transported them after the rollover.

Mr and Mrs Lloyd Robertson of Des Moines and Mrs Anna Springer visited Cone take treving with Ruebsam and Adrienne Vanerus Sunday. The Ruebsams sent Mr and Mrs Lloyd Ruebsam home to Des Moines. Charles Ruebsam and family from Iowa City called on Sunday. Mr Phil Antoenoff and wife welcomed a five pound daughter at Washington County Hospital and will name her soon.
