Mrs. Lui bert C. Miller of Cedar Rapids suffered a concussion and was knocked unconscious when hit by a golf ball on the Ellis Park course.
Verne Millgate of Grinnell was knocked unconscious when a cable broke while he worked on a high tension line north of Oskaloosa. A block of wood, over 30 feet long, struck Millgate on the head. Hospital attendants reported his condition as satisfactory.
Gaynold Carroll of Des Moines, an Iowa State College home economics senior, is chosen as one of two women to compete for a $1000 prize at the World's Poultry Congress in Cleveland. She will demonstrate her 25 egg menu at the Cleveland event.
Two young women attend the Iowa Baptist assembly at Iows Falls Edith Robinson of Caphactiem Haiti and Helen Lee of Shanghai China both students in Chicago. They spend leisure time playing Chinese checkers.
P C Taff assistant director of extension work at Iowa State College and state leader of 4 H club work since 1917 received a letter from Secretary Henry A Wallace of the U S Department of Agriculture commending him for 25 years of faithful service in forwarding the 4 H movement.
Webster City report says 29 year old Chester Claudefelter of Des Moines suffered serious intestinal injuries when his gravel truck left the road two miles west of Stratford. A portion of the guard rail pierced his abdomen while he worked on a road project.
Richard Grant a 15 year old Denver youth was wounded in the chest by a .22 rifle on the first day of a vacation visit to an Iowa farm near Creston. He was rushed to a Creston hospital in serious condition. He is the son of Charles Grant of Denver.
A Washington area pet parade on Wednesday August 9 offers a $15 prize pool across three divisions. The pet division accepts any pet, the historical division features costumes or decorated toy vehicles, and the original ideas division allows decorated bikes or wagons with humorous costumes. The event starts at 10 00 AM and is organized by Leigh Soule of the YMCA with the V as parade chair.
Members of the Whisker Club and Sunbonnet Club are invited to a group photograph on Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist Church steps. Men meet at 4 PM and photographer H. Guther will capture the assembly. at 5 PM the ladies in costumes and sunbonnets join. The goal is near full attendance for a centennial-era record.
Washington residents gathered for the Sunday evening park service featuring the Concert band and Dr. F W Eastwood of the Presbyterian church. He spoke on resources in Christian life and urged rest, then related Jesus feeding the 5000 illustrating how God uses little things. Next week Rev Vernon Carter will lead the service.
Funeral services are planned Tuesday afternoon at 8 for David Irwin who died Saturday evening at his Brighton home. The burial will be in Brighton cemetery. He was born near Burlington on September 23, 1860, married Ida Mason in 1884, and lived in Brighton for 49 years. Surviving are his wife two sisters three daughters and six grandchildren.
Mrs. W. A. Phillips returned home Saturday afternoon after a two weeks visit with her daughter Mrs. Bert Eason at Cranton.
The Sons of the Border club held a Saturday afternoon meeting at the Y M C A. Rob Boyer was elected vice president to preside in the president’s absence. Jimmie Kaeter reported 91 members. pins ordered to arrive next week. Members paraded twice and a new meeting is set for 2:30 next Saturday. attendance required for membership cards and pins. New members listed include Bobby Skipton, Kenneth Palmer, Jim Putnam, Jack Pauls, David McCall, and others. The club aims to add new members and contribute excess funds to a fountain fund.
Cash contributions totaling 173 for the centennial memorial fountain fund were reported by J B Lemmon, city park board chairman. Leading gifts came from the Chamber of Commerce 100 and the Washington County Medical Society 25, with multiple individuals contributing smaller amounts.
The ten highest scoring 4-H boys and girls in the county health contest were called back for examination to determine the boys and girls champion and alternates for the county. Examinations were at the Washington county health unit offices. two boys and two girls will be announced August 10. Read more for the full list of ten high ranking girls and ten high ranking boys.
The Knights of Columbus will hold a special meeting Friday evening July 2 4 in observance of their twentieth anniversary Centennial features will be presented on the program refreshments will be served and a general good time is planned in the K hall
Mr and Mrs George Zeek and Annabella visited over the weekend with Mr and Mrs Lester Pronga near Dubuque. They met the Pronga couple's three weeks old son Louis Lester. Mrs Pronga is the former Ellen Wolfe.
Modern Washington differs greatly from its pioneer roots as the city grows in population and industry. The second act of the historical spectacle Washingtons Heritage runs August 8 9 and 10 at 15 P M featuring living pictures in brilliant colors and costumes. A rapid fire procession leads to The Wheel of Progress finale symbolizing citizenship and civic spirit.
The Ocetjen Bros plan four 40 acre and 120 acre seed corn fields near West Chester with 60 plus workers detasseling hybrid corn. They aim to market the new Washington hybrid under their brand after this season, with several thousand bushels harvested. Fields rotate to stage detasseling, allowing multiple maturities.
Lester Holliday aged 18 of Muscatine died Sunday after diving from a tree overhanging the Skunk River near Brinton's Bridge and striking a submerged log. Despite rescue attempts and motorized resuscitation, a broken neck caused his death. The picnic party included Washington residents and Muscatine locals. Coroner Dr Kyle ruled no inquest.
J. Martin White reports the death of his sister in law Nora Boothroyd at Humbolt after a two day illness. Born near Brighton she was known here as Nora Roberts. She was first married to Sidwell White, later to Steve Boothroyd. She leaves a Clarksville brother, two nephews and a niece. Winifred Kelly of Wabash is visiting two weeks with her parents Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Kelly.
Danzig reports exchange of gunfire with Polish frontier patrols near the border early today with no casualties. Alleged Polish incursion into five-eighths of a mile into Danzig territory, both sides accusing each other of firing first and returning to own zones. In London, Prime Minister Chamberlain denies attempting appeasement by a Hitler loan, saying there will be no discussions that could look like bribery to buy peace.
John B. Rogers company of Fostoria Ohio recalls Harry Dorrington business manager and Irving Weidmiller pageant master from Washington after two to three weeks in charge of Centennial items. Martha Jean Robinson of Des Moines arrives to direct the pageant while Fred Downing assumes business affairs duties to keep proceedings on schedule.
A benefit dance is announced for Wednesday evening atop the city water works reservoir. A 40 by 80 foot portable dance floor will cover the large concrete tank with Hal Reister and his band playing. the Whisker CleS quartet will sing. Tickets are 65 cents a couple with prizes for best whiskered couple. Proceeds go to the fountain fund and the Concert band.
To Wyman Tonight there will be a Centennial booster trip to Wyman this evening with the Concert band giving a concert there. A large number of people are expected to make the trip and those who can go are asked to assemble in central park at seven o'clock.
