The Washington county corn crop suffers under a prolonged heat spell with daytime highs near 100 degrees and humid nights. A 2:15 PM reading shows 96 degrees, following 98 degrees yesterday and 101 on the day the heat struck Iowa. Nightly lows have held around 72 degrees.
Herbert W. Kiehne of Jackson Missouri a 22 year old State University of Iowa graduate student drowned in West Okoboji lake while canoeing with Ted Anders of Emporia Kansas. They were collecting specimens by drag with a canoe when it tipped and their life preservers floated away.
Sixty City reported 14 year old Anton Counter of Sioux City killed when a truck trailer backed onto a loading platform at Holdcroft Transportation Co. The body was found by employee Woodrow Johnson about a half hour after the last truck left. Driver Hugh Barr claimed no knowledge of the accident. Tony had brought a push wagon and was reaching for scrap paper when the trailer pinned him.
Harold Miller 19 of Waterloo was saved from drowning after diving from a spring board struck his head on the pit bottom and went unconscious. Companion Harry Towle 21 recovered him with other youths locating him. Miller suffered possible broken neck and partial paralysis.
Five experienced cement handlers loading trucks for Western Construction Co. walked off in 103 degree heat demanding 75 cents an hour, leaving paving crews of about 200 on Highway 10 from Marathon to Highway 71 without sufficient replacement workers. They were earning 60 cents per hour.
Centerville John Mc Connell fined $1000 by District Judge Edward L Simmons after guilty plea to driving while intoxicated. County Attorney Charles L Johnston notes Mc Connell is a prior offender.
About 804 to 1,000 people are expected in Waterloo for the inaugural convention. Sam Kietzmann reports delegates represent more than 21,000 Iowa workers in independent unions.
Salvador Cedillo 47 won a delay after his common law wife pressed desertion charges. Court halted when his legal wife burst into court with a marriage license showing lawful marriage since 1925. He remained jailed as prosecutors review applicable protections for the wife.
Dorothy and Alice Walker win first prize in the weekly amateur contest held after the band program in town. Mary Martin of Washington takes second on marimba, with strong performances from Harold and Junior Rigenhagen and Max Birka. The Chamber of Commerce offers three and two dollar prizes, while organizers urge quieter crowds for better enjoyment.
Don Radda of northwest Washington, renowned for his corn raising, will be heard on WHO noon Saturday as part of the corn belt hour. Arrangements were made by Herb Plambeck, farm editor. Radda previously astonished farmers with a 23 foot 10 inch corn stalk and has won multiple tall corn awards, including the Journal's tall corn contest and the state contest in 1939 and last year.
Washington July 24 The navy will ask congress soon for legislation authorizing an office to oversee international censorship of outgoing cables.
J. Lloyd Lewis suffered severe facial lacerations and multiple fractures after a bicycle crash near the Howard Benn farm southeast of town. He collided with an unmarked approach to a new cement bridge at dusk Tuesday, breaking his glasses and injuring his face. The road was reportedly open with no warning signs.
At the July dinner at Washington Country Club county bankers from Louisa and Washington counties heard M. W. Ellis of Des Moines, newly appointed state banking superintendent. Ellis outlined his administration goals and stressed faithful duty. Deputy Ralph Bunce spoke on Ellis’s appointment and inflation guard advice. Local hosts introduced entertainment including Mary Martin marimba solo and several vocal duets.
The Office of Production Management announced a stabilization agreement with 800,000 AFL Building Trades members. No strikes on defense projects will occur for the duration of the emergency.
About 80 southeastern Iowa AAA leaders met in Washington to discuss crop insurance. Led by Jess Alton and Harold Simerson, with Basil Huston and Roy Dyas, the group planned outreach to wheat growers this fall via the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation. Carl Oldfield reports wheat yields while county workers finish 1941 crop program compliance. Wheat allotments for 1942 will be mailed to county farmers soon.
A Moscow radio announcer interrupted the eight oclock newscast to state that our radio stations are closing down for tonight. German raids have struck Moscow for three consecutive nights, as reported by the United Press listening post in London.
President Roosevelt today named Anthony J. Drexel Biddle Jr. of Philadelphia as minister to the Yugoslav government in exile in London. Biddle already serves as American envoy to Poland and Belgium.
Work began today under Superintendent Perry L. Jordan to install traffic signal lights at the east Washington Street and South Second Avenue corner near City Hall and State Theater. The project adds a safety island at the northeast corner, with red amber and green signals on each corner to aid the busy two primary roads.
A Canadian National and a Great Northern train collided head on near New Westminster British Columbia. One man reported killed the fireman of the Great Northern identified as Mr Pillinger of Seattle and at least twelve people were injured. Four cars plus the engines were wrecked and injured were taken to a local hospital.
Harry Hopkins administrator of the lease lead program arrived in Ottawa Canada from Great Britain. He was accompanied by Canadian Air Minister C G Power and Canadian Health and Pengons Minister Ian MackKen zie.
Washington residents with old aluminum are asked to leave it at city hall for defense use. Country volunteers may also contribute at city hall, with items cared for by city employees and handed to County Committee Chairman K K Bauer.
Vida Casper of Chicago began a 19 day stewardess training on June 25 and soon endured a crash during a learner flight in Omaha and a midflight storm between New York and Chicago. She later flew a Denver leg with army pilots and completed a rest return trip.
Washington report states House leaders predict the defense bill will pass next week after advance votes. The brief notes the expected approval in the U S capital with reference to congressional sources.
Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson urged Congress to pass a new bill authorizing the retention in active service of all armed forces members. He warned the national interest is gravely imperiled by the international situation.
Secretary Stimson charged Senator Burton K. Wheeler of Montana with near treasonous conduct for sending postal cards urging soldiers to protest U S entry into the European war. He displayed e cards said to have been sent to the War Department by soldiers claiming they came from Wheeler at a press conference.
The county welfare office and Washington park board plan a woman supervisor at the Sunset park wading pool for children up to eleven or twelve. Hours start 2:00 to 7:00 p m, with possible earlier coverage in hot weather. Supervisors will maintain order, supervise kids, and receive basic first aid training to enhance safety and reassure parents. Mothers are urged to explain the supervisor’s role to their children and follow any guidance. Health-unit plans aim to ensure the pool’s physical setup meets requirements.
The $3,529,200,000 defense tax bill, described as the largest revenue measure in the nation’s history, is expected to be approved next week with little or no substantial opposition.

Selective Service headquarters reported 752,572 youths aged 21 registered for the draft lottery held July 17. The registrants had turned 21 since the first grand registration in October 1940. Iowa contributed 13,924 registrants.
Frontier dispatches say a small Ecuadoran garrison in the Quebaraba sector halted a Peruvian attack, reporting more than 500 casualties among about 2000 foe.
