Des Moines reports Herbert C. Plagman, state salvage chairman, asks fall Iowans to aid the scrap salvage drive by reporting locations of scrap materials. He notes 245000 tons is the 1942 quota. 99000 tons from general salvage and 146000 tons from industrial salvage, special projects, and auto graveyards.
Fred Stice, 57, suffered shoulder and back burns when his three room West Ottumwa home burned. He was taken to Ottumwa Hospital in serious condition not, and returned to search for his daughter who was not found.
Des Moines ration boards cannot approve between 4200 and 4500 tire applications due to an insufficient rubber quota. Robert B. Adams, administrator of the state office of price administration, cites a backlog of 4200 to 4500 eligible applications for new truck tires, a result of rubber cuts by the war production board.
A enraged Jersey bull broke from a barn and attacked two horses belonging to Earl Moyers of Louisa county. Lloyd Patterson and P A Moyers locked the bull in a barn but could not restrain it. One horse died and the other was severely wounded and later shot. no harm came to the men.
Des Moines reports 112 men enlisted across the army navy and marine corps with WAAC admissions blocked by lack of applications. Navy recruited 55, army 22, marines 28, coast guard seven. WAAC inquiries totaled 12 personal questions and 10 letters.
Lyle Wertz, 29, Kellogg farmer, and his nephew Wayne Wertz, 9, suffered head injuries when their car collided with a loaded hog truck driven by Ver non VerSteegt, 21, of Lynnville, five miles north of Kellogg. The hog truck overturned but the hogs were unharmed.
Rear Admiral Robert C. Giffen announced that U S Navy units with the British home fleet saw action against axis planes. He said the cruisers battleships and destroyers suffered no damage or fatalities though some wounded may have occurred. giffen gave no details on location or time of the engagement.
John Porter 21 of Washington sustained bruises and a knee injury when his car collided with a Merchants Transfer and Storage truck from Des Moines. The crash occurred last night at 11 45 about 2 1/2 miles west of West Chester, causing about 300 dollars damage to Porter's car and tire damage to the truck. The Porter car was ditched and swung around after the impact. Driver of the truck was Herbert Sweeney of Des Moines.
County Auditor Stan Kiesey presents the budget to the county board showing total tax to be raised at 309450, down from 314444 last year. Reductions include 5000 in court expenses and 5500 in county hospital tax, with increases for state Insane by 8400 due to Glenwood and Woodward patients.
Ivan Norton announces the second Washington city defense school to run five weeks, with Monday and Tuesday sessions beginning July 27 and ending August 25. A public evening class starts June 30 at the high school, led by Norton, to teach basic air raid self protection as fire departments handle emergencies. Col. H. H. Slaughter and Capt. P. G. Sholer are among speakers.
Secretary Morgenthau urged the Senate to raise the 1942 revenue bill to 8.72 billion dollars, erase special privilege exemptions, and retain the 90 percent excess profits tax with a 19 percent postwar credit, arguing House changes cut revenue by about 1.3 billion. He cited exemptions for state securities, 27 percent oil and mine income, and married couples filing separately as the main removals.
The county board and welfare director announce a contract with the Washington County Dental Society for all county approved dental work. Dentists who are members of the society will participate and pooled payments will fund the practice. The program will extend through the public schools adding schoolchildren dental care to the welfare program.
The Washington county selective service board released the order numbers for the fifth registration held June 30. The list tallies 354 registrants aged 18 to 20 with numbers arranged by age. those now 20 are subject to service now, younger registrants to wait until their 20th birthday. The column includes names, addresses and birth dates of each registrant, with many entries from Wellman, Riverside, Washington, Kalona, Keota, Ainsworth and other local towns.
Bus service from Washington to the Burlington ordnance plant now departs earlier. The new times are 5 20 in the morning 1 20 in the afternoon and 9 24 in the evening.
United Press report notes Red Army defending Rostov on the Don and delaying Axis advances toward the Caucasus and Caspian oil fields. German claims of breakthrough near Rostov contrasted with Russian accounts of renewed positions and continued pressure near Stalingrad. Continued coverage indicated a pivotal stand south of Rostov with persistent aerial support.
The War Department authorizes Army recruiting officers for the aviation cadet board to be in Washington July 28 and 29 to examine and enlist men in the Army Air Corps at City Hall at 1 PM July 29. A program with films and a talk will follow in Central Park after the band concert.
