Internal revenue collections in Iowa for the year ending June 30 totaled 64.94 million dollars, up from 32.46 million the prior year. Key sources include corporate taxes, individual income taxes, excess profits, employment, carriers, and miscellaneous taxes.
Martin L. Whittaker was sworn in as commander of the Leon Beatty post American Legion. A. E. Turner of Fairfield first district commander installed the new Washington post officers last night.
Mrs Evelyn Bruce 28 and her mother Mrs Lee Hilding are in critical condition with first to third degree burns after kerosene spilled on a coal range and flames erupted. Dr O E Smith aided them as they fled the burning home. Firefighters extinguished remaining flames but the house was heavily damaged by fire and water.
J A Greenlee assistant registrar announced final enrollment at Iowa State College for the second summer session approaching three times the previous record. Total enrollment reaches 2,388, with 1,824 enrolled for the full 12 weeks. last year’s record was 893.
Investigators from railroad special agents and police probed an apparent derailment attempt on Illinois Central tracks near Fort Dodge. A track inspector found a creep iron piece on the main line rail a mile east of town, with an angle fastened to the flange to prevent movement. A collision would likely derail any approaching train.
Pottawattamie county board of supervisors agreed to pay farmer George Tellage $1,230 for removing a 90 foot bridge that access to his land. The county later maintained a substitute road to Kellogg’s property while settlement settled the suit.
Mrs. Ray Frette of Portage Wisconsin about 35 died from injuries in a four mile north of Jewell Iowa crash. She was driving with her husband and daughter en route to visit relatives when the car veered into a ditch after she apparently fell asleep.
Terry 3B. Olin has been secured as secretary of the Washington Y M C A and will arrive to begin work Monday August 3. He moves from Newton Town after several years as Y secretary there and will rent a house in Washington prior to moving. The transition follows Leigh Soule leaving for Dayton Ohio with only a two week gap before Olin’s arrival.
Jeannette Krabill has been named the new bookkeeper at Freshwater Feed, joining the staff to oversee accounts and financial records.
Senator Edwin Johnson of Colorado urged equal rights for the WAACs noting they are paid on a pre 50 dollar monthly scale. He cited the law raising service men's pay and argued women in the auxiliary corps deserve at least an even break.
A first ward defense meeting last night organized ward structures for citizens defense. A third ward session is set for this evening at city hall with second and fourth wards to follow Thursday night. Ivan Norton, county corps commander, travels for civil defense work and urges enrollment in next week's defense schools and readiness to host air raid wardens at local homes.
One of the large tank trucks used to apply hot oil on county roads overturned north of town this morning. The driver sustained a slight injury to one arm. The machine was largely undamaged and little oil was spilled. An ambulance and fire truck were summoned amid fears of a serious fire or severe injuries.
Washington county war board met to initiate a county wide scrap metal drive with a 1000 ton allotment. A July 22 meeting at the Y M C A will organize town and township collections and a five truck farm to farm campaign with farmers paid by weight.
The Washington county local board publishes its policy for meeting wartime manpower needs. It states married men may be drafted to fill August and September calls, outlines four categories of eligible registrants, and emphasizes orderly induction by order number while preserving due process and local cooperation.
The nationwide scrap rubber collection totaled 450000 tons and officials say reclaiming plants will operate at full capacity for more than a year. The announcement came from war production officials in Washington D C on July 22.

United Press reports the Don river battle expanding from Voronezh toward the Caucasus. Axis forces claim a breakthrough east of Rostov while the Red Army masses reserves near Stalingrad. Moscow counters by saying fighting continues north of Rostov and Red forces gain ground on both sides of the Don.
The Senate approved by voice vote a bill transferring authority over synthetic rubber production from the War Production Board to other agencies. Sponsored by the Agriculture Sub committee led by Senator Guy M. Gillette, the measure would promote rubber produced from grain alcohol.
Mrs. H. G. Richardson and Ed Bovee represented Washington county at the state judicial convention held yesterday at Hotel Fort Des Moines. The party renominated Justice Richard F. Mitchell of Fort Dodge and Justice Edward A. Sager of Waverly for re election. A third nominating slate named William R. Hart of Iowa City to replace Justice Carl B. Sager of Toledo who is not seeking re election.
