Waterloo native Ann Sothern known as Harriette Lake aspired to be a concert pianist. She trained as a chorus girl in film musicals, met Florenz Ziegfeld in New York, and rose to major film stardom speaking French and Scandinavian. She led in the stage hit If Thee I Sing.
The new foot bridge attached to the viaduct east of Eldora is open. The protest for its construction began after CCC member George Folkerts of Aplington was killed in a car incident on the bridge. Built by Welden Bros. of Town Falls, the structure cost 6990 dollars, spans 960 feet with crested pine decking and iron railing.
In Waverly Nashua Indiana a grocer named Jack Gogg cut the index finger of his left hand almost to the bone with a knife. Later Wayne Laugherty, also working there, cut his finger with the same knife. Two days later Gogg cut his finger again and then broke the knife into pieces and discarded it.
The small town of Hampton-Latimer with 375 residents claims the title of smallest town with a bandit-proof bank. A Minneapolis firm installed equipment costing several thousand dollars, featuring bullet-resisting glass over an inch thick at teller cages.
A dull evening turned exciting when Farmer R. M. Martens set his 20 acre wheat field ablaze to destroy black rust. A passerby unaware of the action alarmed the fire department, drawing a large crowd to the scene.
Vincent Adams aged 45 from South Bend Indiana was observed at a Montgomery Ward store with an overcoat draped over his arm. Store manager A R Howe noted Adams leaving with a suit concealed beneath the overcoat and realized he had not paid for the clothing.
County Agent W. J. Roudabush reports no creosote oil will be needed this year to combat chinch bugs in Washington county. Despite some oil in neighboring counties, the insect pressure this season is far lower than last year. Oats damage has been limited and the corn crop shows strong progress, suggesting the hoped protection by chinch bugs will not be necessary.
A Sunday evening storm dumped 2.20 inches of rain, mostly in an hour, flooding basements and streets in Washington. Fire engines pumped water from cellars at the Y corner and near East Main street. minor crop damage reported while a small bridge near Brighton washed away.
Troop F returns from a mounted trip to Wellman aiding the town’s semi centennial celebration. Hot, buggy weather and some soreness did not spoil a day of shows and a Saturday evening program watched by an estimated crowd of 1000 to 2000. Wellman businessmen hosted the camp and provided meals, with the troop camping near the city park and Durian pasture. The ride helps prepare the men for Camp Dodge forthcoming two week session.
Brighton residents recount two heavy downpours that dumped six to seven inches of rain, flooding cellars and flattening corn fields. A car carrying Mrs. Frank Weidner, her mother, and her son was swept by floodwaters but escaped, scrambling to higher ground as water reached the car door handles.
Rain lashed the community Sunday night as services began. At United Presbyterian Church the choir performed a valued program with attendees near the number of the audience, about 25. Other Washington churches drew small crowds as torrents fell at 7 30 p m.
In Santa Monica, ABA convention attendees broadly disparage conventions as ineffective and favor giving government control to lawyer judges. They joke that conventions always occur in extreme heat and propose slogans about meeting to perspire together.
Des Moines reports from federal weather observer Charles D. Reed indicate scattered rains across eastern and central Iowa benefiting the rapidly growing corn crop. Rain amounts ranged from under half an inch to heavy downpours in Dubuque Oskaloosa and Albia with Indianola and Knoxville also receiving over an inch. Temperatures climbed to 98 to 99 degrees across the state as hot conditions persist.
The county board reports drilling resumed after casing was installed to protect the upper part. Contractors continue through rock at over 500 feet and expect ample water flow before reaching another 100 feet. Work has stretched over several weeks as crews drill toward the lower depths.
Sioux City residents in Woodbury county filed three petitions with Governor Herring requesting an investigation into conditions disrupting city government. The petitions totaling 73 signatures will be sent to Attorney General Ed L. OConnor for possible action, tied to a grand jury recess and allegations of external influence, bribery, and political motives behind ouster efforts.
Washington district report shows the AAA spent 767 195 306 dollars in the first eleven months of the 1935 fiscal year. Iowa AAA funds totaled 66 945 760 dollars with 66 050 651 for corn hog benefits and the rest for expenses and wheat and sugar benefits.
Officials plan to replace the inadequate well at the county home to ensure a plentiful water supply for residents and staff. The project aims to secure reliable access and support facility needs.
Edward Rinner of Noble area offers a large gray granite boulder to the Women’s Relief Corps to serve as a Civil War monument in Central Park. The four by four foot stone, weighing several tons, will be moved soon to the southeast corner. The corps reports $239.81 raised for food labor and clothing and plans a Sunset Park picnic on August 8.
Ed Wahl of Victor Iowa received the contract to crush rock and surface county roads this summer. He is ready to begin within a week barring weather delays. Wahl has the county crusher at Grace Hill and a secondary crusher on county trucks. He plans to work at Grace Hill and Bailey quarries to lay a new rock surface on 12 miles of roads and maintain surfacing for 30 miles.
The Senate today approved an amendment offered by Senator Robert LaFollette Wisconsin to establish agricultural import quotas under AAA legislation. The plan would let the president fix quotas to protect price gains from processing taxes. The vote stood 60 to 17.
Pete Adrian of near Keota was in town today. He stopped at local shops and spoke with residents about a community project.
Ted Dalton leads carpenters in adding a kitchen to the Pleasant Inn on South Second Avenue near the courthouse. The expansion doubles seating by converting the original building into a dining room while the new kitchen serves both. Mrs. Wanda Bowden, current lessee, plans to reopen soon likely by week’s end.
Peter R. Schantz 74 of Crawford township died at his home after strokes suffered in 1896 and 1934. Funeral at Eicher church Tuesday at 10 AM, burial in Eicher cemetery. Survived by widow Catherine Mast Schantz five children Viola David Wilbur Ben and Mrs Howard Platt, five grandchildren. one son Ira died in France WWI. He was active in Eicher Mennonite Church and farmed nearly fifty years. Funeral arrangements are L A Jones Funeral Home.
At Terre Haute Indiana a general strike spreads across industries shutting streets, power plants and many businesses. A labor holiday cripples transit and services as 600 Columbus Enameling workers strike in solidarity with the nationwide action. Adjutant General orders Indiana National Guard mobilization for potential duty in the area.
Due to rain the boy preacher remains for another night at the Foursquare Gospel tabernacle. He will speak on Spiritual Education at 7:45, sing, read, and answer questions. A large crowd attended last night despite the weather, and more are expected tonight.

Washington stores see heavy weekend crowds despite staff limits as 75 percent of shoppers end up waiting until evening due to work. Central park water lilies bloom now. Residential Washington shows active building, street resurfacing, and railroad crossing upgrades on East Washington Main North Marion and Iowa avenues.
