North west Iowa authorities say a gang stole merchandise valued at about $5,000 from five firms in northern Iowa within ten days and is trucking the loot out of state to sell at cut rate prices, mainly men’s suits.
West Liberty reports M. L. Fleurhanger, aged Victorman, tried to pass a west bound auto on highway No. 6. He tangled with five machines before stopping. Three of the damaged vehicles remain in a West Liberty garage.
A Traer area report notes a George F. Knoop & Sons corn field eight miles east of Traer stands six feet tall and tasseling. Local fields are about average for the season with some lag behind typical growth. Sweet corn destined for the Dysart canning plant tassels and shows promise for a strong crop.
Fairfield reports the stamp business showing little effect from a low mood. Fred A. Spielman, a major midwest dealer, is assembling a California millionaire’s collection costing thousands. Mint stamps in blocks of four form the core, including an 1871 newspaper set from 1 cent to 100 dollars in unused books. The Spielmans expect to attend the national philatelic meeting in Washington in late August 1935.
In Muscatine three physicians formerly at the Baker cancer hospital testified as state witnesses at the justice court hearing for Norman Baker. They described Baker issuing orders to hospital staff after a 1932 injunction barred him from practicing medicine locally.
Plans for the 1935 Bible conference nearly complete for the fourteenth annual session. Directors say the program will be one of the finest Bible conference programs in the country.
Mrs. Larry Wycoff, 34, who had quadruplets last June, welcomed a 6 1 2 pound girl. She had five older children, making nine briefly before the smallest of the quads died soon after.
SIGOURNEY A D Hart 65 year old Keokuk county farmer rigged a radio from his auto to a corn cultivator so baseball broadcasts could be heard while plowing. He notes his horses stop every time Chicago announcer Bob Elson whoops. Now haying time Hart parks the radio rig near the hay mow door.
Keokuk authorities report Dr. C J Chrestensen former Red Cross head and Spanish war veteran missing since June 7 has been found in Coffeyville Kansas. He will be returned to Keokuk on a warrant charging embezzlement.
Ottumwa Courier carrier Paul M Davitt, 17, was kidnapped by two men in a car, robbed of $15 in collections, and taken to Ditnois before being found safe at home.
Representative Hamilton Fish of New York accused President Roosevelt of violating the constitution in a hot speech in Washington. He said impeachment would be unwise and foolish and rebuked by Representative Lindsay Warren of North Carolina for a press statement.
Washington and Des Moines indicated the coming work relief plan will stress secondary road improvements. Harry L. Hopkins announced farm to market roads would absorb unemployed, with Iowa relief and road building HQ echoing. A survey in Washington County seeks additional quarry sites to supply rock for road surfacing as the program develops next fall and winter.
The Washington Community Players will broadcast Dinner is Served a mystery by Claude Woods and David Fulton over WSUI Wednesday at 8 PM. David Fulton directs with Mary Mickey in charge of production.

Kansas State College agronomy chief R I Throckmorton and colleagues say rains helped curb dust storms last spring. Government and farmers spent about 330000 dollars in Kansas plus similar private sums on soil erosion control across states. Plowing, furrows, and terracing are emphasized to keep soil covered and reduce wind erosion while noting current surface blowing is minimal.
The bulletin reports fewer hogs this year in Germany Denmark and the United States with the U S smallest slaughter in over a quarter century. Prices are expected to rise in the United States due to slim slaughter while increased fall farrowings boost weights and feed supplies. Exports remain weak as hog production falls with U S lard exports from the Danube Basin rising in early 1935.
A federal grand jury in Woodbury county subpoenas bank records of 17 individuals including Governor Clyde J. Herring as part of a broader liquor inquiry. The investigation targets deposits in Des Moines banks and involves figures from both major parties.

Saturday night baths pose the most serious challenge for the large brood.
Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr proposes to mint new one half cent pieces for the first time since 1857 and to authorize a coin worth one mill or a tenth of a cent. The plan aims to price many everyday items in fractions of a cent.

A massive fire at the Hiram Walker distillery in Peoria Illinois left one man dead and caused about 3 million dollars in damage. Flames leaped 150 feet after a wall collapse triggered an explosion in the rackhouse as thousands of barrels ignited. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours as debris and intense heat hampered rescue efforts.
