A strong wind storm near 3 pm Thursday battered North Wapello with near-tornado force. The Baxter Canning factory cooling shed roof was torn down, large sections hurled onto the main building. Trees were uprooted across the area.
A 20 minute hail storm swept a three mile belt from e land to Toronto at 4 p m Thursday flattening corn and oats crops. Hail stones the size of walnuts lay on the ground so deep it could be shoveled.
Des Moines officials will ship soil from Pulaski Iowa for the base of a statue honoring General Casimir Pulaski. Gov Clyde Herrings announced the plan, arranged by Secretary of Agriculture Ray Murray at Poland’s request.
A former staffer of Der Deutsch Amerikaner, now living in Detroit, repaid a $20 debt to a Waterloo friend after spotting the debtor’s business sign during a drive through town. The incident occurred about twenty years after the man left the paper.
