Washington County cattlemen voted on the beef checkoff with 84 opposed and 67 in favor among 151 valid ballots. Three ballots were invalid for lack of registration, no spoiled ballots, and 205 voters had registered. National results were awaited as ballots closed Friday with mail ballots accepted through Tuesday. Balloting began July 5.
Dale Turner of Columbus Junction was acquitted by a Washington County Magistrate Court jury of assault and battery. The six member jury deliberated about 40 minutes after a 1 15 p.m. trial day. The case involved Terry L. Reschly of rural Washington with defense attorney Russell Newell and prosecutor Gerald Denning.
Monica Kafka of Washington was charged with failure to have control after her car struck a parked vehicle owned by John Jay Goodwin and then hit Kirfman's residence at 412 East Third at 2:41 am. Officials estimated $2,000 in total damage to three vehicles and the home.

Fred Carlson Construction Co. of Decorah bids $647,933 for concrete resurfacing on W55 from Washington to the Henry County line, and Hanson Construction Co. of Washington bids $155,715 to build a bridge on a gravel road in Marion Township Section 13. Bids opened in Ames. awards awaiting formal acceptance. W55 paving to 8.9 miles, starting August, with 22 foot road and three foot gravel shoulders, misalignment near Red Brick School. Bridge work to start October cross Crooked Creek, replacing a century-old span. bids under engineer estimates.

A 47-year-old man, William McRoberts, threatened to kill his seven-year-old son with a straight-edge razor during a three hour standoff at his estranged wife’s trailer in Waverly. Police stormed the trailer at about 10 p.m. and rescued the boy unharmed. McRoberts was booked on assault with intent to do great bodily harm with no bond set.
Officials of the ninth annual Camp REECE plan a seven day event August 8 to 14 at Lake Darling State Park to aid campers with learning disabilities. Richard Herlein coordinates the camp with Michelle Curley and Janet Lower as directors.
