The city marks ten years without a pedestrian fatality, earning an AAA pedestrian safety achievement for the tenth straight year. Perry leads Iowa with 96 years without a pedestrian death, well ahead of Chariton in second at 13 years.
The Red Cross will offer a basic rescue and water safety course for ages 11 and an Advanced Life Saving course for ages 15 at the Municipal Pool starting Monday July 25. Classes run 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 12 noon. To enroll, contact Mike Gray at the Municipal Pool or the local Red Cross office before July 25.
Friends of the Washington Municipal Band offer free popcorn at the Wednesday 8 p.m. Central Park concert. The Washington County Shrine Club will operate a popcorn machine and serve free popcorn to attendees while supplies last.
National Weather Service forecasters said a stationary frontal zone stretched from northern Minnesota to the Dakotas with little Iowa impact beyond a few clouds in northern areas. A hot south to southwest flow will persist for a couple more days as overnight lows ranged from 69 to 77 and midday temperatures climbed into the 80s and lower 90s across Iowa.

The National League of Postmasters filed suit against the United States Postal Service to halt further publication of postmasters salaries. The USPS had released a list of postal employees and their salaries earlier this year, with an Iowa edition listing Iowa postmasters and their pay.
A tractor trailer rig apparently without brakes struck a school bus in Dumfries Virginia injuring nearly three dozen children. Driver James Stewart 38 of Pass Christian Mississippi told Prince William County police he attempted to stop at the intersection but brakes failed.
The Washington City Council bought two 1977 model trucks for the street department and moved to acquire three lots from the Iowa DOT near the water works for up to 7500. Washington US Senator approval backed Carter’s decision to scrap the B1 bomber in favor of cruise missiles and enhanced B52s. Leading critics included Sen. Milton Young Sen. John Tower and Sen. Barry Goldwater who remain among the bomber’s strongest supporters.
