A column notes the University of Iowa in Iowa City begins a full time civil flight training course. Twenty reserve aviation cadets enroll in a ground school program supported and financed by the federal aeronautics administration and operated by the state university.
Norma Lee Cutter, 14, of Seymour, drowned in a pond near an abandoned coal shaft while wading with two companions. Her friends Ana Couchman and Harriet Iverson, both 13, ran for help as volunteers recovered the body from water over eight feet deep.
Centerville notes its population of 859 according to the last census while a signboard in Cincinnati shows that several young men from the area have joined military service. The army leads with 53 volunteers, followed by nine in the navy, two in the marines, and one in the coast guard. no war casualties reported among the group.
A weekend series of auto accidents near Des Moines left one dead and nine injured, including two in critical condition. Dave Gustafson 52, of Chicago was killed when his westbound car collided head on with another vehicle about 1130 p m on Highway 6 eleven miles east of Des Moines. Roy G DeVotte 57 of Mitchellville Iowa drove the other car and suffered head cuts. The Gustafson party included brothers Gus 72 and John Andrew 76 and a brother in law Charles Palmer 7 all of Chicago who were also injured.
The Sioux Rapids firemen voted to donate the proceeds of their summer celebration to the United Service Organizations. The affair will be held July 28 and 29.
The Journal carrier boys wrapped up six months of War Stamp and Bond sales with a record week, selling large quantities to readers and receiving visitors from across Washington county who bought on their credit. The final day drew heavy purchases as the boys completed their drive.
Sales totals for the week reached 39919 dollars and 15 cents, lifting six month sales to 104659 dollars and 20 cents. Joe Sweet led with a 5 star award after surpassing 7631 dollars in sales, followed by Jim Easter and others reaching high and next tiers, with several returning star award holders noted and thanks extended to families and the American Pearl Button Co. for support.
The Washington Journal notes claimed dominance in war bonds and stamps sales may crown the team state champions by a wide margin. Confirmation from the treasury department is expected in about a week, with a chance of setting a national record too.
Washington residents will hear the old ISU steam siren next Monday at six for a test and to announce a new defense school at the high school that evening. Commander Ivan Norton says enrollment is open to all patriotic citizens with about 800 possible pupils and 300 expected, with sessions five weeks long on Monday and Tuesday evenings.
Mrs. Albert Lay of the Washington county employment service says requests for common laborers for defense work have arisen in neighboring states. About 1,000 workers are needed on a non union project in South Dakota. Interested persons should visit Mrs. Lay at the employment office over Nicola and Harmon book store. Additional projects are listed in Nebraska and surrounding areas.
The House passed and sent to the Senate a war revenue bill totaling about 6.8 billion dollars with corporate tax rates revised. The roll call stood 302 to 2 with two members voting no. The plan sets corporate normal tax at 40 to 45 percent and excess profits at 90 percent after last minute revisions.
Lucille Reed returns Friday to her beauty shop after weeks away. She visited her brother Francis, stationed at Fort Francis E Warren in Cheyenne Wyoming and at Colorado Springs, Colorado. The rest of the time she stayed with her parents at Springville.
Minister Rev Alfred Trenerry of the Baptist church addressed a large summer union audience on Following Christ as the path to a new life and service. He spoke of Jesus as the central figure inviting happiness peace and access to God and urged obedience through the Holy Spirit to combat entrenched evil. Dr R C Keagy of the Methodist church read scripture and Dr F W Eastwood spoke.
United Press reports the Red army massing on the lower Don front for a decisive clash with the German drive toward the Caucasus. Timoshenko conducts fighting retreat south of Voronezh and Donetz basin to exhaust the enemy and shield Rostov and the route to Stalingrad. British air and naval actions in Egypt and Tobruk raids, plus RAF strikes at El Daba, are noted as part of Allied pressure. Chinese forces recapture towns in continued fighting.
Councilman R F McFarlane senior warden for the first ward announces a civilian defense meeting for the ward Tuesday at eight o clock at city hall. It invites all who attended civilian defense school or are interested in civilian defense from the northwest part of town.
Rev E S Hebner led announcements and prayer. Boyd White led congregational singing and directed the young people chorus in a special number. It was announced that Dr Keagy would deliver the sermon at the union service next Sunday evening in the park.
