First Black Miss Universe Crowned Penny of Trinidad

Two individuals disarmed Iowa Patrol Trooper Rex Phares after a stop at the Interstate 35 and Iowa 92 interchange near Martensdale. The chase involved 20 troopers and two airplanes searching for a yellow station wagon with Tennessee plates. Columbus Junction marshal shot. suspect held on murder charge

Terry Lee Smith, 23, of Wapello, is jailed on an assault with intent to murder charge in relation to the incident after being arrested near the scene.

Propane Tank Blast Injures Four in Clinton Iowa
A propane tank explosion at a Pine Ridge Trailer Court mobile home in Clinton Sunday night injured four people. Wayne Smith 56 Irene Smith 58 and Bernice Peterson 65 were listed in guarded condition at Jane Lamb Hospital while Floyd Peterson 62 was treated and released. Police said Smith was checking for a leak inside the trailer as the other three stood outside. The mobile home sustained minor damage.

Jim Drayfahl a 34 year old Ainsworth driver remains in serious condition in a Harrison Arkansas hospital after a semi tractor trailer left the road struck trees on a curve near Green Forest last Thursday night. He suffered multiple injuries including a broken collarbone hip leg ankle ribs and lung damage. He was hauling 1014 live turkeys for Sinn Truck Line of Wayland en route from Arkansas to West Liberty about 600 birds were killed in the crash.

Washington youth injured in Prairie Flower road motorcycle crash
Doug Collett, 16, of 727 East Second Street, remained hospitalized in critical condition at University Hospital in Iowa City after a Sunday afternoon crash on County Road G-26. Fires threaten Utah forests as crews battle two blazes
More than 400 firefighters fought two large wildfires in Utah. The Ashley National Forest blaze on the Utah Wyoming border charred about 1,500 acres, killing three Forest Service firefighters Gene Campbell Dwight Hodgkinson and Dave Noel. Planes dropped retardant but high winds risked spread. A second fire near Nephi on Mt Nebo covered 700 acres with no injuries reported though a missing four wheel drive vehicle was lost.
