Heath lauds Nixon China move as key to living with Communists
British Prime Minister Edward Heath praised President Nixons China outreach as a significant step in learning to coexist with the Communist world. He spoke to the American Bar Association London conference and argued Western and Communist systems differ, but Western handling of those differences has changed. Heath dismissed fears over Britain joining the European Common Market harming American interests, noting doubling U.S. exports to the six member states over a decade. An ABA official said SALT talks show encouraging progress with the Soviet Union and East European allies, while Irwin stressed Nixon aim at China should not threaten Soviet security.
