Bell seeks 124 percent rate hike for Iowa Bell

Northwestern Bell Telephone Co requests a 124 percent rate increase from the Iowa Commerce Commission affecting about 600 000 Iowans. Letters to customers explain higher charges for long distance calls local service and equipment with a projected annual increase of about 15 million dollars and a 12 to 13 percent rise in average residential bills.

Pro Communist officers establish a seven member ruling council in Khartoum banning many parties and newspapers. Some members previously ousted by Maj Gen Gaffar al Numeiry for Communist ties. Ray vetoes two 1971 Iowa bills as session closes

Gov Robert Ray used item vetoes on the last two bills of the 1971 Iowa Legislature striking parts in the social services appropriation and the BFCC related to real estate and transfers. He argued the alcohol treatment referral section would hinder care and that extra BFCC oversight would create delays and confict with executive authority, warning of reduced state efficiency.

Labor pacts signed to cover 125 million workers

Ten tentative contracts totaling about 5 billion in wages and benefits reach to cover 125 million workers across Bell Telephone and Postal unions. Postal workers gain job security and a 1.1 billion package for 750,000 mailmen while Bell employees secure a 4 billion three year deal. Beirne orders return to work as unions await ratification.

Crisis at Iowa State Penitentiary grows with staff cuts

Warden Lou V. Brewer warned the Budget and Financial Control Committee that prison security and inmate management are strained as staff levels shrink from 289 to 255 due to a $600000 cut in the biennial budget. Inmate numbers fell from 1300 to 820, boosting militia activity and racial tension. officials fear a day to day survival battle unless staffing and programs are preserved.
