Paris report on the fifth international conference notes a strong link between tobacco use and cancer. Dr. Morton Levin of Albany cites a New York state study of Roswell Park patients showing higher lung and lip cancer rates among cigarette and pipe smokers than non-smokers, with four of 1,000 cigarette smokers likely to develop lung cancer.
Funeral services for M. Johnson were held Monday afternoon at Sherman’s funeral home with Rev. W. J. Grossheim in charge. Burial followed at Elim Grove cemetery. Casketbearers were Robert Benson Ralph Anderson Hubert Erickson Marion Swanson David Neiswanger and Don Sheetz.
Voters in the Ainsworth consolidated school district approved a 66,000 bond for a new 100 by 100 foot gymnasium and auditorium to attach to the current building. The present gym will become classrooms and a lunch area. The superintendent’s home bond, set at up to 10 thousand, failed. Marriage licenses issued to four individuals from Riverside, Iowa City, and Tow a City.
RB F Parker pled guilty to piloting a plane while intoxicated. Police Chief J W Hill said Parker was arrested after he buzzed Lovington at 200 feet, resulting in a $100 fine.
Fire traps three workers 7 never mind instead. Two men died as rescue teams struggled to reach a 1 000 foot shaft in the U S Smelting refining and Mining Co mine 25 miles west of Salt Lake City. Missing are Leland Nielsen 88 Claude Auguston 41 and Gordon Meyerhotter 38. A crowd of 950 watched from a hill as authorities pressed to reach the doomed men.
In Holyoke Massachusetts the Whiting Paper Co ends an era by replacing horse drawn wagons with motor trucks. The move ends a hundreds year old practice that began in 1863 and signals full adoption of gasoline engine logistics for the mill and freight operations.
Allied air units bombed North Korean columns near Taejon and backed U. S. reinforcements. Four tanks and 50 trucks were destroyed while bridges tunnels and railways were hit. Front reports said U. S. forces abandoned Taejon though the line north of the city remained firm.
Emil V. Valenta of Keota dies at 61 after a yearlong illness. Born Sept 5 1889 in Elberon he owned dry goods and shoe stores in Elberon and Keota. Funeral Thursday at 2:30 PM at Keota Methodist Church with Rev. Williams. burial in Keota cemetery. Survived by wife Anna three daughters a brother and a grandchild.
Clair Clark 53 of Columbus Junction died of a heart attack Tuesday night at 8 while refueling at a local service station. Funeral services set for Thursday July 20 at Pleasant Grove Church of God with Rev. W L Sanford officiating and burial at Indian Creek Cemetery. Stacy Funeral Home in charge. American Legion to provide military rites. Clark a World War I veteran born August 11 1896 survived by wife Hazel Stone, two sons Robert and Keith, two daughters Mrs Russel Smith and Mrs Jack Parson, six grandchildren, a sister and a brother.
In Charleston South Carolina a nightwatchman was wounded and two workers fired upon at the Virginia Carolina Chemical Co plant near here during a strike. John Donalds age 61 was shot in the chest while at the office window. bullets also hit a worker’s car and a tin roof. Police, firing from a Negro project area, searched the vicinity for suspects with no arrests. The mine mill and smelter workers union has been picketing the plant entrance.
A second floor fire at the Washington State Bank building caused heavy water and smoke damage to the bank and Farm Bureau and Extension Service offices. The bank opened midday at another location while investigators assess losses estimated between 75 000 and 150 000. Three Des Moines Transit drivers aided in early firefighting efforts.
Culver City police say they uncovered a huge gambling ring linked to a nationwide operation betting over 1.5 million dollars monthly on major league baseball. FBI and treasury agents join the investigation as detectives trace the ring from a race track bookie to a drug store rear room serving as its local headquarters. Culver City lies two miles west of downtown Los Angeles.
Gen Evangeline Booth longtime international commander of the Salvation Army died at her Hartsdale New York home after two years of illness. She led nearly four million adherents worldwide and retired in 1939 after more than five decades of service to the homeless and unemployed. Last rites will be read at 8:30 a m CST Thursday in Centennial Memorial hall Salvation Army headquarters New York by Commissioner Ernest I Pugmire national commander of the army in the U S.
A 32 year old New York engineer was jailed in 100000 bail as the fourth American facing the death penalty in a communist atomic spy ring. Julius Rosenberg, described as a key link, was arrested in Manhattan with wife Ethel amid charges of conspiracy to commit espionage. The FBI said he helped recruit and direct the theft of A bomb plans for the Russians and warned another spy to flee.
Twenty nine boys from Washington are spending this week at Camp Arrowhead operated by the Ottumwa YMCA. Some have been there a week and others arrived Sunday.
