Des Moines IA column cites Iowa death toll from heart diseases reaching about 8,200 in 1943, up 10 percent from 1942's 7,441. Health Commissioner Dr. Walter L Bierring attributes aging population and a spike linked to the influenza and respiratory epidemic in December 1943.
T W Dever died after a collision between his car and a vehicle driven by 17 year old Leon Purvis at a country intersection near Beacon. Dever was pronounced dead on admission to the hospital.
Edgar Phillips of Seymour, 64, paid 40 in Mayor Miller s court for parking on the highway without flares and for defective truck reflectors. His companion Orlena Collins 28 formerly of Seymour now employed in a local factory paid 15 and costs for intoxication after a Saturday night highway patrol arrest near here.
The Office of Price Administration issues a suspension against Karl Cole of Manchester Iowa, prohibiting him from handling rationed commodities from July 17 to July 31. Enforcement attorney Donald Holdoegel said Cole used gasoline without surrendering proper coupons, failed to account for gasoline ration evidence, and redeemed coupons without the required endorsement.
A Waterloo intersection collision involving a bus driven by Mrs. Amy Nelson and an automobile driven by Jake Berger left eight people injured. Four patients were released after receiving medical treatment.
Burlington Transportation Co officials led by Agnew KE Larsen inspected potential landing sites and features for a proposed helicopter service in Ottumwa. The firm filed an application with the Civil Aeronautics Board to operate helicopter or similar aircraft near existing bus routes in several western states, with trip findings to be added to the official filing.
Tricia Sullivan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael J. Sullivan, dies from brain concussion and internal injuries after falling from a swing and striking a concrete basement step in Waterloo.
Congressman Thomas E. Martin told a Rotary club audience that Americans have set records in food production despite labor and equipment shortages. The American 1st Army clinched the capture of St. Lo in a major breakthrough of the French campaign. Henry T. Gorrell reports from the battle front that the assault breached the German defense ring around the harbor area as British and American forces press on near Caen and Noyers.
Daryl Dayton, pianist and Pomona College assistant professor, will give a public piano concert in Washington on July 20 to benefit the American Red Cross. Admission is by donation, with proceeds going to the Red Cross. Dayton, a homecoming native, trained at Oberlin and Grinnell, studied in Europe, and has taught in Chicago and Minneapolis. The program features Beethoven Bach Chopin and Debussy at Washington High School auditorium starting at 7:30.

Betty Novy fourteen year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Novy sustained first degree burns at the Novy farm near Riverside when a chicken house exploded during spraying. Bettys brother outside avoided injury. Firemen battled the blaze but the structure burned to the ground. Betty remained in Washington county hospital resting fairly comfortable. Insurance coverage was expected to offset some loss.
The country club hosts the third of four dinners in a series for men after a golf event. The evening begins with golf at 6 o'clock and dinner served at 7 o'clock at the clubhouse on Thursday July 20.
