Mrs Harry McKeen aged 65 died in a Carroll hospital after an emergency operation to remove choking food. She leaves a son and daughter.
Cedar Rapids residents face undelivered letters about delinquent poll taxes after 15 000 letters were mailed. The tax was repealed but efforts continue to collect back amounts.
Iowa Falls Frank Finger aged 75 died from injuries after a field accident at his Ackley area farm. While removing morning glories from a binder the team bolted and pitched him into the machine knives. He leaves 11 children.
Sheldon report describes a chain collision at Ashton edge where two cars collided injuring Mable Francisca of Sheldon who lost several teeth and cut her leg. A California car from the north then struck Mrs Matt Seiort of Ashton, breaking her hip.
Waterloo county supervisors vetoed a Workers Alliance petition seeking a higher wage scale for relief clients working grocery orders. They maintained 35 cents per hour, citing recent WPA wage reductions and inability to sustain a 50 cent scale.
DES MOINES nearly 5,000 Iowans will lose or have lost WPA employment as federal funding contracts. State WPA head George J. Keller says 2,813 must be cut from the rolls before August 1 to align with reduced appropriations and a push for private sector work.
Charles Heck and Nora Sanny report repeated thefts in Anita. A thief is taking Heck’s car to steal Miss Sanny’s chickens and profits from fryer items. Gas theft totals nearly 100 gallons over the past week. Miss Sanny posts a sentinel with a loaded shotgun near her barn.
Spencer Merle Adams a filling station operator was freed after a peace justice ruled he was justified in biting off a fellow townsman's ear during a fight. Theodore Tielbur, a farmer, testified he was attacked and Adams claimed self defense after being struck. The judge dismissed the charges.
East rider Ted Terry of Sun Valley Idaho travels to the New York World Fair on a bicycle named Hitler while William F. Coester from the Bronx bikes toward the Golden Gate Exposition in San Francisco. They meet under a cottonwood at Stuart share a handshake and discuss travel and publicity before parting.
Treasury figures show a daily deficit of over 22.3 million dollars in the first 15 days of the new fiscal year. For 1939 40 the total deficit by July 15 reached 335 million, compared with 291.7 million in the same period last year.
The Sigourney Municipal Band under J. R. McEldowney will present its regular weekly Wednesday evening concert in Central park with fifty members. The program includes a varied selection and will feature a return engagement by the Washington Municipal Band on August 4. Grainger.
Health examinations were given to 126 4-H club boys and 84 girls yesterday at the Methodist church. Dr. Barrett and a team of physicians led the medical checks while 4-H leaders aided with the girls tests. Ten top boys and girls will be recalled for further exams with two champions chosen to represent Washington county at the state fair. The event also features a chorus rehearsal and a Centennial pageant drill.
At a city council meeting the proposed budget for the next taxing year was adopted and August 7 set for a public hearing. The plan shows total funds raised nearly flat from last year with a slight decrease and taxation at 98 175 dollars, up from 38 318 last year. The notice of the hearing with fund allocations appears in this paper.
Donald Stout served as the representative for Washington county in the previous year, according to local government records. He acted on behalf of the county in official capacities and duties during that period.
Republican and Democratic senate leaders will review the administration neutrality proposal with President Roosevelt and Cordell Hull. The conference aims to decide the fate of neutrality revisions for this session and whether adjournment may come soon.

Police near Washington investigate three forged checks totaling 108 dollars cashed at Big Giant Plegly Wregly and National Tea stores on Saturday. Each check was for 36 dollars drawn on Washington National Bank. A second man, about 20, ordered groceries before “Mr. Lewis” appeared. Sheriff Putnam took the evidence to Iowa City for further leads.
The Washingtons Heritage pageant features an early wedding scene on August 8 9 and 10 with Bride Mary Westphal groom C J Mennhill minister Rev Arthur Atack and many guests. The ceremony ends with a halted dance as elders and the minister intervene. Mrs Francis Haney leads the group of bridesmaids and rehearsal notes mark states represented by Mrs A Keith Droz and Mrs Florence Hout. Centennial commission and chairmen met with Harry B Dorrington to finalize the program with new features. full events will be published tomorrow.
Contributions to the Centennial memorial foundation fund were reported by Mrs. Rose Reid. Donations included multiple individuals from several states, and clubs raised funds through fountain souvenir booths on the square. The American Pearl Button Co. donated thousands of souvenirs for sale, and proceeds from a kerchief sale will benefit the fund.
Fort Madison officers hunted western Iowa for Howard Williams alias John H Williams a Black man who escaped from the Iowa penitentiary and assaulted a Fort Madison woman last night He was sentenced December 28 1947 at Fort Madison on a charge of assault with intent to rob The subject has additional outstanding charges and warrants as noted by police
A Washington Centennial series begins with a booster trip to Kalona and Riverside tomorrow evening at 7 00 led by Chairman Glen Holden. Members of the Whisker and Pupbonnet clubs and the Concert band are urged to meet at the bandstand and bring their cars for transport. Avanvelle Erskine of Grimes visits with her grandparents Mr and Mrs Or Schmitt for two weeks.
A inmate who had served time in Louisiana, Texas and Nebraska penitentiaries escaped while working outside the walls. He was reported missing after the incident.
Oklahoma fugitive Jack Russell, sought for the kidnapping of four men and the death of one, was captured 418 miles away in Ozark Arkansas. Sheriff Champ Crawford lured him from a cabin on Mulberry Creek, ordering him to surrender. Russell admitted the kidnappings but denied killing Billy Hamilton Kaneas, and was taken to Olark after the arrest.
The annual Washington coal contract was awarded to Wilson Coal of Washington as the lowest bidder. Bids include payments of 5.64 in July and 6.89 for courthouse and jail deliveries, with county fuel delivered at 6.09 in July and 46.54 later. Elsie Davies of Cotter filed a business claim this morning.
Vincent Callahan began yesterday as head of the meat department at the National Tea store in Dubuque. He has nine years in the meat business and four years with the same store. The couple moved Sunday to 414 East Jefferson Street and are interested in baseball and basketball.
