Washington County residents are invited to tour the county home during an open house Sunday from 1 30 to 5 p m. Guided tours will showcase work by home family members and the facility's operations. In Wayland voters approved an electric franchise renewal for Iowa Southern Utilities Company by 81 to 7.
The Postal Service launches a new fast mail express from Oakland to Chicago with over a million pounds of parcels and publications. The service aims for a 50 hour trip, cutting delivery time by a full day for second and third class mail to the Midwest, as daily trains run seven days a week carrying up to two million pounds of mail across 60 cars.
Vice President Spiro T. Agnew said he will seek reelection as vice president only if he might someday pursue the presidency. He noted he has not made a firm decision and would keep options open for a possible presidential run.
Astronaut Edgar Mitchell will teach a parapsychology course at Kent State University. President Robert Olds confirmed Mitchell will join the faculty and a formal appointment announcement is forthcoming.
Spiro California, known as king of the Romany gypsies across Latin America, died in Santiago at 63 from a heart attack. He led a gypsy empire from Mexico to South America for 15 years after succeeding his father, with son Hugo 44 as his heir. He left 12 children and 60 grandchildren.
Iowa State Board of Regents approves a 249 million operating budget for 1973-75, a 21 percent rise from 1971-73. The bill includes 19 million for faculty salaries and spans five institutions with capital requests totaling 25.5 million while trimming overall requests to fit state revenue projections.
A violent Friday storm swept Iowa with funnel clouds high winds and large hail. A tornado touched down near Mount Ayr destroying farm buildings but no injuries were reported. Downed power lines and window damage occurred in Davenport and other towns while a Des Moines couple escaped a tornado with their travel trailer.
John B. Connally, former Texas governor and ex Treasury secretary, announced at the Western White House he would urge fellow Democrats to support President Nixon. He criticized McGovern as isolationist and radical, did not seek the vice presidency, and listed three possible Nixon roles while praising Nixon’s push for world peace.
Nixon’s popularity rose 4.5 points in the Sindlinger Political Confidence Report during the Democratic National Convention. Of 1,116 interviewed by telephone, 54.2 percent would vote for Nixon now, with 31.0 percent against and the rest undecided or unsure. The rating was the highest in two decades, surpassing Eisenhower’s 1956 level.
Light rainfall in Washington County compared to eastern Iowa Friday night brought .34 of an inch in Washington city. Wind accompanied the rain but no serious damage was reported as the storm watch expired. Farmers had hoped for more rain to ease dry field conditions and benefit crops.
Bi annual census released by Washington officials shows the district up 28 young people from 1970 to 1972. The counts rose slightly overall though several younger groups declined while older ages edged higher. The census guides school planning and was conducted by the Washington High School Future Business Leaders of America under advisor T. J. Berdo.
