A note thanks Washington residents and farmers for purchasing war bonds and stamps. The six months as salesmen of war bonds and stamps conclude today and Saturday, with the team optimistic about meeting state champion goals and credit sales at the Journal Office.
The Journal Carrier Bay 4 invites readers to buy bonds for the paper's credit, stating the deadline is 10 o'clock Saturday night at the Journal office.
Warren County authorities say Wayne Heller aged 22 and Darwin Heller aged 19 admitted stealing gritting rods copper wiring and brass from Warren County schools. Des Moines police traced sales to junk dealers where the brothers sold materials for about 67 dollars, far below value.
Sloan Hutchinson 36 a lawyer and Rollo Hutchinson 34 a real estate man from Davenport joined the Navy in Des Moines as seamen first class. They are sons of Mrs Eva Hutchinson of Davenport and both are graduates of Augustana College Rock Island Illinois. Sloan also studied three years at the State University of Iowa.
District Judge E W Dingweil ordered Harold Leverton of Story County fined 300 dollars and jailed 60 days with 100 dollars and the sentence suspended. Chad Cong of Dallas County received a 300 dollar fine with 160 dollars suspended on similar charges.
Commander Ivan Norton of the Washington county citizens defense corps attended Kalona’s graduation of 88 students from the local defense school. Dr. F. W. Eastwood gave the keynote address as E H. Rief led the program. Norton urged rapid organization completion to meet inspection demands, noting Iowa City’s recent scrutiny and warnings to strengthen local defenses.
Governor Wilson keynote blasts the New Deal over synthetic rubber from grain and war spending. He urges immediate use of grain for national needs, critiques rival promises, and stresses economy and patriotism as Iowa Republicans rally for 1944.
The U S Army announces Maj. Gen. M. W. Clark of New York will command all American ground troops in Britain while Maj. Gen. J. C. H. Lee of Junction City Kansas leads services of supply. Clark previously served as chief of staff to Lieut. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower in the European theater.

Army aircraft on July 6 dropped 56 bombs on the Japanese island of Tiska and bombed an enemy cruiser in the Aleutians, the navy reported today.
Washington county nears completion of the annual road oiling program with seven cars still to be applied. About 100 miles of roads have been oiled using 40 cars holding 10 000 gallons each, totaling around 400 000 gallons. Rock chips cover about half the miles, sourced from Grace Hill quarry.
