The United States urged United Nations members to provide a police force to replace Marine units in Lebanon. Ambassador Lodge called for a UN mission to safeguard Lebanon’s independence, with implications for Soviet vetoes and regional stability.

Last rites for Henry Kraling a former Wellman resident who died in Long Beach California will be at Powell funeral home at 2 p m Saturday. His body arrives in Marion Friday with wife Bertha Jones and daughter Ruth Didwell. Rev George Pennington will officiate and interment is in Keota cemetery.
Bernard Goldfine testified to House investigators that he phoned Presidential Assistant Sherman Adams 43 times between Nov 20, 1957, and May 11 to learn about general conditions. He said he contacted Adams at the White House or home whenever necessary, denying any improper influence.
A 36 year old janitor confessed to the lovers lane slaying of 18 year old Joseph Dixon near Carter Lake Iowa. Dixon confronted a masked assailant while with Rita Ficke 15 of Omaha. Dixon was shot during a struggle and the weapon was recovered. Jackson initially lied then claimed the car was stolen.
Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd announced he will fly to Washington to discuss the Middle East crisis with Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. He said Britain backs U.S. intervention in Lebanon at Beirut’s request and that 10,000 British troops and Royal Navy units stand by.
Beirut in turmoil as Lebanese rebels order a cease fire enforced by U S Marines. The move drew sharp protests from Moscow with Andrei Gromyko demanding withdrawal and vowing possible measures. Marines landed to support peace efforts while regional powers readied forces and alerts across the Middle East.
Gov. Herschel C. Loveless said Iowa cannot accept the Defense Department plan to cut National Guard strength by 40,000 troops. He and 47 other governors back an alternate reorganization plan as the 34th Iowa Nebraska National Guard Division would lose about 1,400 officers and men. Loveless noted the Middle East crisis underscores the need to maintain Guard strength and said governors will present a united front. He spoke after meeting with Adj. Gen. Fred C. Tandy, who also commands the 34th Division.
Washington street improvement moves forward as Larsen Construction Co crews prepare concrete curbs and gutters on South Iowa Avenue and near the State Theater. City crews under Orville Long and Perry Jordan, plus Iowa Southern Utilities under Leo Mangold, advance sewer, gas mains, and light pole relocations for widened streets.
Six year old Jerry Garrison suffered first to third degree burns after a manhole cover blew off in Muscatine Iowa as sewer gas ignited his shirt. He was listed in fair condition. Gas company and city officials investigated the blast and potential leakage.
Flash floods forced about 700 residents from Fort Scott Kansas as six inches of rain drenched the town. National Guard troops aided evacuations while Marmaton River near flood stage and creeks Buck Run Mill Creek overflowed, with widespread damage across several counties and states as other storms sweep the Plains.
Mrs. Agnes Rustan becomes the laboratory technician at Washington County Hospital replacing the departed Mr. James who moved to Marion Iowa. She will be assisted in the lab by Martha Renoux.
The Evening Journal announces the annual Three-Quarter Century Club dinner for Washington County residents aged 75 or older. The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 23 at the Washington Country Club with invitations sent two weeks prior. About 200 members exist and eligible nonmembers can contact the Journal office to join.
Washington reports 1,800 more Marines ashore in Beirut bringing total to 3,600 with over 5,000 expected as U S leaders defend Lebanon against a Communist pattern of conquest. President Eisenhower warns of serious consequences but aims to protect independence and world peace while seeking UN action.
Davenport Iowa ex convict Laverne L Zaehringer 29 shot and killed Det William H Jurgens 47 during an exchange with officers. He also wounded Patrolman Ernst Lester who radioed for help after a struggle with the suspect abducting nightclub organist Marilyn Sullivan Cedar Rapids uninjured but shaken.
