George S. McGovern and running mate Thomas Eagleton vowed a united Democratic front to defeat Nixon. They met with leaders at the Fontainebleau breakfast and pledged to blend volunteers with party machinery while courting labor support amid a tense nomination battle and calls for unity.
The Washington County Problem Drinking Center opens in Washington County Hospital with executive director Grover W. Stubbee announcing part time operation from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays. The center will later become full time and plans include an Industrial Alcoholism Program and school educator outreach.
Des Moines witnesses before the Interim Taxation Study Committee call Iowa's tax structure unfair and too complicated. Referee Lothar Schmid awarded the game to Boris Spassky, placing the Russian ahead two games to zero. A committee was formed to review the ruling, with little expectation of reversal.
United Press International reports scattered showers and thunderstorms mainly east tonight with lows from the upper 60s to mid 80s. Saturday brings decreasing clouds and cooler highs in the 70s to mid 80s with continued chances of brief showers in the east.
