Contingents Arrive at Iowa Prisoner of War Camps
Two new contingents reached the region this week. One group arrived Thursday including prisoners captured during the invasion. The first group came Wednesday from Fort Riley Kansas and other parts of the seventh service command. The Liberty Missouri branch camp opened this week and Audubon Iowa is set to activate Monday.

Hail Storm Wrecks Northwest Crops and Homes
A severe 15 minute hailstorm near Matlock nine miles northwest of Sheldon struck late Friday afternoon. The storm swept six to seven miles wide, ending about six miles east of Sheldon, destroying most small grain and reducing other fields to 5 to 10 bushels per acre. Windows in homes barns sheds and businesses were shattered by hail up to large sizes.

Iowa City Judge Rules Beer Permits Discretionary Duty

Arrest Iowa Girls With Carnival Show
Three carnival workers traveling through Rock Island were arrested on disorderly conduct charges. The 14 year old hula dancer claimed to be 16 to a carnival peace officer, and two others, a 17 year old and Wilma Krene Kost, 21, were jailed on $10,000 bond awaiting hearings in ten days. Police said the trio lived in a small hotel with two men.

Wallerich Fined for Intoxication and Vandalism

Carriers Picnic Awards Prizes To Journal Boys
Eighteen journal carrier boys gathered last evening for a summer picnic at the tiller home on South Iowa avenue. Winners in the spring delivery contest were announced with a $10 prize to Onyder and $5 to Lee Gorochander. Third prize went to Duck Green with $3. Special prizes of $1 each went to Wayne Barnes Dan Brindley Clara Barton John Winga. Croquet and lawn bowling followed the meal with Brindley Buck Humm winning croquet and Maynard Goff Brock and Humm taking bowling. Numerous carriers and Mrs Dave Elder attended.

Emery O. Leichty 47, a Wayland area farmer, died at home from injuries after a hayloader team bolted yesterday morning. He attempted to stop the horses and was run over. funeral set for Sunday at the Wayland Mennonite church with burial in Sugar Creek cemetery. Survived by wife Effie Roth and four children including son Max in Italy.

Drive on delinquent auto use stamps announced by IRS official
John J. Mattes of the internal revenue office says a stamp delinquency drive will begin next week. Merton D. Bickford died at home at 806 South Iowa avenue after six months of heart illness. Funeral at St James Catholic Church with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He was born October 1872 and married Martha Paulus in 1898. He retired from the post office in 1937 and is survived by his wife, son George, and several siblings.
