John Morrell & Co. lifted prior restrictions on hog deliveries effective Thursday. Shippers may now bring hogs to the Ottumwa plant at any time, ending months of required telephone notice before stock delivery.
Judge Shannon B. Charlton sentenced Delbert Kurtz a young farmer near Waterloo to eight months in the county jail for giving liquor to two girls aged 16 and 14 while riding with him in a car. He was paroled to his attorney E F Keith.
Iowa crop and livestock reporting service says apples in commercial areas on July 1 reached 82,000 bushels, near double the 1943 crop but below 1942 and the 10 year average. Peaches are nearly vanished as a commercial product with 28,000 bushels this season. Pears total 68,000 bushels, while grapes hover around 2,900 tons, near last year’s level.
Rodney Schoelerman 25 of Everly drowned during a morning swim in Miller's bay on West Okoboji lake. It was the lakes' first drowning of 1944. His brother Stanley and G S Smith of Spencer recovered the body in seven feet of water as vacationing before naval service begins July 26.
Leroy W. Zipz a 27 year old tavern operator died Thursday afternoon when his Taylor Cub crashed five miles east of New Hampton and burned Zipz could not escape the burning aircraft. Virgil Schwickerath a nearby haying farmer said the plane flew low struck a fence and ignition followed.
In Iowa City a panel at the peace officers' short course urged that rehabilitating delinquent parents is the key to rehabilitating delinquent children. They cited parental neglect and misdirection and said training and environment in the home must drive therapy to correct the situation.
Five year old Robert Graves Jr. is in critical condition at Willard Hospital after an older brother accidentally shot him at home in Manchester. Pvt. Robert Graves Jr. of Lamont, father of five, enlisted in the Marines on June 21. Red Cross seeks to contact him.

The County Sheep and Wool Growers association will hold its second graded lamb sale of the season next Wednesday July 19 at the Milwaukee yards in Washington. Lambs accepted from 6:30 to 10:30 A M. E L Hegg of Iowa City will grade. Mark Campbell Jr of Ainsworth and J W Rich of Crawfordsville will lead the sale as president and secretary. Sellers invited to bring lambs.
Washington county’s fifth war loan status shows progress but still short of quota. With two weeks left, bonds total $1,078,470.50 against $1,243,000 target and E bonds lag at $483,625 of $740,800. The Iowa war finance committee urged extra purchases and pledged support to reach $19 million statewide.
Justice of the Peace W S Eldridge fined five Washington men ten dollars plus costs each for gambling. Names are Max Shepherd Bryan Coakley Robert Smith Chester Howard and Marvin Buckwalter. George Calhoun paid one dollar for a false check and settled the amount. William Dunbar was fined five dollars for intoxication. Leroy Yeggy and Alphonse Klepfer of Riverside were fined ten and five dollars respectively for operating motor vehicles without licenses.
Reports from the county hospital today said JoAnn Ross 17 daughter of Mr and Mrs Darrell Ross is improving from injuries in an auto accident earlier in the week. She suffered a fractured collar bone and broken ribs. The car was driven by Kenneth Patterson 17 of Washington.
C F Anderson, seven year Burlington agent in Washington, is checked out today and will serve tomorrow as station agent and yardmaster at Monmouth Alabama. Monmouth, population 10 000, lies between Burlington and Galesburg and this assignment marks a substantial promotion as he expanded railroad business in Washington since June 1937. He returns to his old Illinois home at Oquawka and Biggsville. Harold Booth of St Charles Iowa acts as temporary relief agent at the station.
Pearl Harbor dispatch reports American forces preparing new thrusts in the central Pacific after seizure of Maniagassa island near Saipan. The enemy suffered the loss of two top naval leaders, including the Pearl Harbor sneak attack commander. Admiral Nimita signals further strikes against Japan.
Kenneth sustained bruises and cuts after a ditching incident involving Wellman and Washington. No further details available.
SUPREME HQ reports the American 1st Army advanced along a 42 mile Normandy front after a German retreat, seizing four villages and approaching Lessay by about a mile. Bradley’s line repelled at St Lo while widening gains along the coast and targeting Periers with frontal assault. Es Aubris and La Vinceterie fell as American troops moved southeast of Sainteny.
The Chinese central news agency reported July 14 that great fires burned for three days in Yawata Japan's main steel center following the American Super-Fortress raid on July 7.
