A coroner's jury ruled death by own action in the case of Mrs Dienna Houser 28 formerly of Ottumwa Iowa. She was a dancer with an amusement company playing here. Mrs Houser died in a hospital early Wednesday after taking poison in her hotel room late Monday police said.
The Clinton Products Co a government alcohol producer will use the August holiday granted to industrial plants by 10 WPB to produce 120000 gallons of alcohol for a Louisville distillery. Partners H Y Engeldinger and R S Comb said the arrangement also allows the Clinton firm to buy bourbon whiskey from the distillery for its own brand.
Iowa farmers held 178.7 million bushels of corn on July 1, with harvest delayed as crops grow too tall. Oats and soybeans were also below the prior year’s levels, while the state faces a drought era carryover and lower carryover than last year.
Des Moines reports 102 Iowa towns record war fatalities in the first 12 days of July, adding to June’s 155 and May’s 149. Cumulative Iowa World War II deaths reach 2,197, excluding those missing less than a year who are officially counted after a year. Iowa World War I casualties were under 3,600.
Corp. William Spear of Estherville suffered a broken shoulder blade after colliding with a cow near Belleville Kansas while trying to avoid a bus while returning to his Laredo base. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. I. Spear.
Fire destroyed a large barn sheds machinery and livestock on the Adolph Delfs farm five miles from Gladbrook. Loss estimated at 50000 with two cisterns providing water as Gladbrook firefighters battled the blaze from 2 30 p m to 8 p m. The barn held machinery hay two horses a cow and a calf while other structures such as a hog house granary and machine shed were also destroyed.
Washington county and other Iowa counties lag in sales of Series E war bonds with about 70 percent of the quota reached. State War Finance Director W. L. US 5th army repelled counterattacks near Era river valley, pushed beyond the line, and captured Castiglioncello as eight miles of Livorno port remained in Allied hands.
A wartime briefing in Washington reports that a captured German document, dated months earlier, shows the enemy is suffering a severe manpower shortage impacting Europe war progress. Secretary Robert P. Patterson disclosed the finding.

Mrs. Anna Elizabeth McGinnis 74 widow of Joseph R. McGinnis died at her son’s home north of Haskins after a two month illness. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2 p.m. at L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev. Basil McBee officiating. Burial will be in Somers Wisconsin. She was a long time member of the Associate Presbyterian Church and was born August 31 1869 near Washington. She married January 14 1892 and lived near Washington before moving to Wisconsin in 1928. Surviving children include George Clinton Wis William Ainsworth Iowa Twila Dodder Letts Iowa Ruth Longmore Somers Wis Martha Paynter Clinton Wis Annetta Adams Union Grove Wis and Lester McGinnis Ainsworth. One son Elwyn preceded her in death. Sisters and a brother surviving are Mrs Malcolm Montgomery and Mrs Joe Wilson of Ainsworth and Boyd Stephens of Washington.
