At the University of Iowa navy flight school cadets report hard exercise strict diet and full sleep to gain weight. In the first battalion of 243 trainees 161 gained 2 to 9 pounds and 14 more than 10 pounds since May 25. In the second battalion of 242 trainees 55 gained 5 to 9 pounds and nine added more than 10 pounds since June 11.
Voters in Waterloo approved consolidation of the two school districts in back to back votes. The first vote favored merger 949 to 362 and the second on the 22 approved the plan. A third election will name a board of directors for the new district.
Twenty two Yorkshires Creamery Co. workers halted work in Ottumwa in a wildcat strike after the suspension of an employee following a dispute with his foreman over side rating.
Hugh Martin of Waterloo now at Camp Bowie Texas filed suit in municipal court claiming Edith H Burk chief clerk of the west Waterloo draft board used her position to obtain a $50 loan before his induction. Burk calls the charge absolutely false and asks dismissal.
The University of Iowa completes a merger of the former dean of men dean of women student housing student employment and student aid offices into a single super office. Prof Woody Thompson directs the new unit with Dean Robert F. Rienow and Dean Adelaide Burge named as senior counselors.
Harry L. Knode, 49, a Waterloo area service station attendant and WWI seaman second class, was sworn into the Navy again in Des Moines exactly 25 years after his initial enlistment. He now serves as motor machinist's mate second class.
Des Moines reports livestock officials from about a dozen states gather in the city to draft a brief for the national livestock advisory council arguing price ceilings on beef products are too low.

The county selective service office completes sending questionnaires to 194 men from the third registration. Unsent blanks were mailed today, with 94 more to be delivered before closing. This finishes questionnaires for all 1,094 Washington County registrants who signed up then.
Five people died and at least eight others were seriously injured when a Standard Oil bulk plant exploded in Florida today. The blast wrecked five houses and destroyed 25,000 pounds of scrap rubber, followed by smaller concussions and widespread fires. About 3,000 residents were awakened by the shock as volunteer firemen battled the flames.
The county rationing office reports receipt of bicycle purchase forms and opens applications. Washington county quota is five bicycles through July 21, replacing a prior 20 bikes through August 30. Purchasers must be in gainful work or aiding the war effort. The county also sets five automobiles for the month with three car purchases allowed and three applications pending.
A. L. Duensing announces Alvin J. Lueder resigns as supervisor of the oral association after 60 years. Lueder will become chief supervisor of Polk county four herd improvement associations effective August 1. He joined the local group in 1936 and earned a state gold watch last year for top records. He also volunteers with Tri-County Holstein Breeders and other county dairy groups.
Lieutenant General De W. Emmons announced start of large scale department maneuvers, the largest in Hawaii history. The dress rehearsal will unfold Friday across Oahu and other islands as defense forces simulate a test like the one that might have followed Midway victory.
Army quartermaster corps urged a quick settlement of the strike at the national stock yards in East St Louis. It warned that supplies of meat for troops might be shipped from distant points unless livestock trading resumes. The stockyards company and AFL representatives failed to reach wage accord in a lengthy St Louis negotiation.

The county rationing board reports state guidance allowing farmers to receive extra sugar for hired harvest help. Eligible farmers may get half a pound per week per worker, with surrender of the hired man’s ration book after the work period. Sixty six applications and forty one ration books were processed. Brighton issued 37 certificates for canning sugar.

Washington D C July 14 The house delayed a vote on a proposed grain sale compromise as lawmakers debate complex parliamentary maneuvers and postponed action until tomorrow on the week old deadlock.
War Production Board chairman Donald D. Nelson told the Senate agriculture sub committee that the United States will supply rubber for all essential military and civilian uses by 1944. He said remaining 1942 production would reach 32,300 tons and 73,000 tons would be made in early 1943, with end of 1943 output at 338,000 tons.
