A Iowa column notes wrens ignore housing shortages by nesting in a pair of overalls left on a clothesline. Ms. Robert Mott found the birds built a substantial nest in the garment, which remains on the line.
Frank Wild of Toledo was fatally injured at the Tama county farm when a hayfork lifted him and pulled him to the cement floor. He was treated in a Marshalltown hospital, with his wife and daughter Dona Jean at his side.
Ames Iowa beekeepers will hold a statewide meeting at Har n. F B Paddock extension vice apiarist at Iowa State ollege announces the event. Glenn O Jones Iowa Beekeepers association vice resident will lead the sessions. Bee farm of D Taylor, a leading money producer, will be visited during the opening session.
About 100 young aviators competed at Cedar Rapids Air Ways port in a one day model airplane show sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce Youth Bureau and Hawk Ye Aeroneers. Prizes exceeded $250 with entries from Wisconsin Illinois and local competitors among roughly 7 000 spectators watching the first large scale event here.
Mrs Ralph Vest of Belknap and her seven month old baby were injured when a car driven by another of her husband s collided after a tire blew on a curve. Mrs Vest sustained arm and finger injuries and both were hospitalized at St Joseph hospital.
Mrs. Chester Hull of Ottumwa suffered a knee injury when a car driven by her husband crashed into a car owned by John Rullman. Hull was being held by Ottumwa police on a charge of driving while intoxicated. The Rullmans were on their porch when they witnessed the Hull car crash into the other machine.
Fire cursed by a backfire from a hauling combine ignited a blaze that swept about five acres of wheat owned by Frank Sydow four miles east of Onawa. The truck was badly damaged and Onawa fire department responded to the incident.
More than 300 employees at the National City Stockyard went on strike today in East St Louis, paralyzing operations at one of the country’s largest hog markets and disrupting activity across the industry.
A U S district court jury convict ed 25 year old John D Eklund of murder in the second degree for the October 1940 ambush killing of a man in Washington D C He had been twice tried for first degree murder and faces a sentence of 20 years to life But he escaped from a prison van during deliberations and was recaptured after a brief chase in rain by marshals and police.
Clarence Farrier, an army deserter who walked away from Camp Wolters Mineral Wells with three prisoners, was arrested by Sheriff H. M. Putnam and Deputy Walt Kiesey. He claimed to surrender tomorrow and had been hiding near Walnut Creek on road No. 1. He said he had been working on a farm near Silvis Illinois since leaving April 17 and was en route to Brighton with his wife when caught. He is jailed awaiting army authorities.
The Washington county 4-H achievement show will be held August 19 and 20 with girls exhibits in the Methodist church and livestock displays at the armory. The Boys and Girls 4-H committee met to plan, reducing the event to two days and naming Knotek as livestock superintendent along with regional leads for beef dairy swine and sheep. A health improvement contest will judge progress over last year, and a service flag honoring former 4-H members now serving in the U S military may be created.
Attorney General Francis Biddle announced that the FBI arrested 14 individuals who acted as contacts for eight Nazi saboteurs now on trial. Two defendants’ parents were among the arrestees, six were women, with arrests in Chicago and New York in the last three weeks. Hoover said investigation continues into the group linked to sub marine landings on the Florida coast.
Clarence Logan becomes Washington's new volunteer weather observer succeeding Preston Wolf who resigned after six years. Logan, who observes without pay, starts duties today using government instruments moved from the Wolf greenhouse to 703 South Third Avenue and reports to Federal Meteorologist Charles D. Reed and also records for the War Department.
The citizens' defense corps headquarters opens in City Hall with Joan Keifer as office girl. Office hours run 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Telephone 380. Commander Ivan Norton notes the redecorated room will also house salvage, civil air patrol, and be available for committee meetings for up to forty attendees.
Journal carrier boys sold 6861.75 in War Bonds and Stamps over six days. The tally includes fifty seven $25 bonds, twenty four $50 bonds, thirty six $100 bonds, two $500 and one $1000 bond.
Secretary Leigh W. Soule of the Y M C A delivers a final Washington message at a Sunday night service in Central Park before departing for Dayton Ohio after 14 years as secretary. He speaks on The Rich Young Man and the churchs role in service praising local figures Don Sherman and Orville Elder.
Orcutt’s Piggly Wiggly installs a special container for old razor blade collection. Claude Woods notes many men have twenty five to one hundred blades and need a place to dispose of them. Blades turned in at the store are collected.
The region experiences another warm spell with temperatures rising into the nineties. By early afternoon the mercury neared 93 as residents anticipate continued heat amid wartime salvage efforts and steel demand.
County home project committees meet at 1 30 Thursday at the Farm Bureau office to write lessons for the coming year. Mable Phipps Iowa State College will assist with the lesson study. Mrs Merle Twinam Crawfordsville county chairman leads the meeting. Mrs Richard Stephens reports on the Des Moines state meeting held June 28 29 30.
Captain Howard Miller and Lieutenant Rodney Kephart return with 33 headquarters troops of the First regiment Iowa State Guard after a two week session at Camp Dodge. They report good training focused on wartime emergencies with no major casualties and note the Washington company excelled in parades and reviews. Regular army instructors and a military police battalion assisted. Induction center work begins on Camp Dodge land formerly used by the 113th cavalry.
German high command launches fresh assaults northwest of Moscow and near Voronezh as main operations push within 190 miles of Stalingrad and about 100 miles from Rostov. Axis gains threaten the Caucasus oil fields while heavy Russian artillery inflicts losses. About 75,000 German troops fight for Voronezh 10 miles east of the Don.
Funeral services for W L Dusenbery 68 of Flint Michigan will be at 2 PM Thursday at Shermans funeral home with burial in Elm Grove cemetery He died yesterday at his Flint home after a heart attack He was a Buick employee for 18 years and leaves a widow Laird an adopted daughter Jean two grandsons a stepson and several siblings all named in the report with local ties to Washington and Davenport.
