Des Moines Marshall county led Iowa in scrap rubber collection with 19.8 pounds per person, according to the final report. Emmet County ranked second at 15.3 pounds per capita in an incomplete tally reported by salvage committee chairman H C Plagman.
Mrs. Erma Leighton told police a greyhound escaped a local kennel and killed about 20 spring chickens while injuring several others. The incident occurred near her home in Council Bluffs, reversing her former sympathy for the racing dogs.
Two youth camps in Stonepark Sioux City and one at Crystal Lake Neb near South Sioux City were closed on advice from Dr John A Cowan city health supervisor. Joan Bright of Sheldon is seriously ill with Rocky Mountain spotted fever, believed caused by a wood tick bite while tending a camp.
Mrs. Martin Hansen 27 with her two children suffered a hemorrhage while waiting at the Union Bus depot. A police ambulance rushed her to hospital and a blood transfusion followed eight minutes after a plasma request. Condition improved to good. Her husband serves in the United States navy.

Waterloo police officer Lincoln Beasley, 50, was found dead with a bullet wound at Byrnes Park. An inquest will consider accidental death over foul play after investigators found $12 cash, a wristwatch, a .38 revolver, a can of worms, and a flashlight near his body, with four youths locating him while dew worm hunting.
Washington county farmers backed Journal carrier boys in a week of strong bond sales. The team led by Joe Sweet and others aims to top a state championship with more than 5 000 in sales, facing a last week push and a final July 18 deadline.
