Sioux City reports H. K. Hanna of Moville was fined 15 dollars in municipal court for using a fire alarm box as a letter drop. The incident highlights a long running column on Iowa life and small town missteps.
Iowa City will host a photography contest during the University of Iowa short course on photography July 27 28 and 29. Five classes of competition will be open for entrants from Iowa in both news and feature picture categories.
Casey-Gordon Thompson, 28, a fugitive from Mount Pleasant state camp, was captured near here by Guthrie county officers and state highway patrol after escaping July 2.
Anamosa Warden Foss Davis promoted eight year deputy L. J. Womachka to deputy warden and Ray Purcell yard captain and former Jones county deputy to assistant deputy warden.
About 375 Monroe county WPA laborers were idle in a protest against new WPA wage schedules. No formal strike vote was taken as around 25 men blocked access to the projects.
Sioux City report says a person with liquor breath is more likely to be stung by bees while teetotalers are safer. Frank Pellet of Atlantic told about 100 beekeepers that bees dislike nervous, fidgety people and prefer quiet individuals.
Brecher sues Montgomery Ward Co. in Sioux City for 2923 dollars claiming an employment contract was broken. He says he was employed at Waterloo at forty dollars a week then transferred to Clinton where he found no job available.
About 300 members of the Iowa Letter Carriers Association attended a dance at the Jefferson hotel during their state convention in Iowa City. Registered members hail from 118 towns across the state.
Clarence Hinton age 47 died from lightning burns at Rockwell City while unloading cars in an elevator during an electrical storm. Carl Harrison suffered severe burns and remains hospitalized in Lake City. Paul Reidmiler was only lightly injured.
Oskaloosa reports John Lambert 39 a transient from Albia sleeping with a hand on the track in Minneapolis and St. Louis yard. A switch engine backed over his hand causing head injuries. He later died after his hand was amputated.
A marijuana patch outside the northwest edge of town was ordered cut by county authorities to remove the danger of use. County Attorney Richard A Stewart, with the county board of supervisors and County Agent J W Chandler, identified the narcotic weed and ordered its removal.
The Washington Centennial pageant cast committee meets at 7 30 this evening at the Y with chairman Clarice Meek and pageant director Irving Weidmiller arriving late today. Veterans from John B Rogers company, producers for fourteen years, will organize group leaders and rehearsal schedules for the August 8 9 and 10 three night event featuring 350 Washington people in twelve episodes portraying local history.
Washington's city wide July clearance is announced in today's Journal by local firms tied to a Chamber of Commerce sponsored mid summer sale. The four day event runs Wednesday through Saturday with a Wednesday parade opening. Committee chair Walter Rukgaber says firms cooperation will bring thousands of bargains for shoppers.

Mrs. Rose Reid, chairman of the fundraising committee, reports seven contributors gave 12 dollars to the fountain fund. Contributions include five dollars from Mr. and Mrs. O. M. Hensleigh of Morning Sun and one dollar each from Lucy H. Stahl of Manly Iowa Charles George of Shenandoah and Mrs. Lucy Errett of Kewanee.

In Washington Congress debates restoring WPA hourly wages amid nationwide relief strikes. A Minneapolis riot inquiry centers on a policeman beaten by strikers who later died of heart disease. Iowa WPA says 2,000 workers were cut since July 1 to meet a 24,100 quota.
Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Wilson of Burlington will be at 4 p m tomorrow at Underkircher funeral home. Burial in Aspen Grove cemetery. She died after a two day illness with a heart affliction in a Burlington hospital. She moved from Washington to Burlington eighteen years ago and was aunt of Olive Campbell.
Mayor R L Lytle collected 14 dollars from 14 violators of a one hour parking limit in front of stores on the square. Police tagged 23 cars last weekend but most hearings were postponed. Offenders paid early or faced lenient fines of one dollar each as the city considers stricter enforcement later. Four boys cited for firing firecrackers in Central Park had their case postponed.
The Agriculture Department forecast a corn crop of 2,570,795,000 bushels with a carryover of about 425,000,000 bushels. This suggests a vote on marketing restrictions to prevent price-dumping. Secretary Wallace must proclaim a quota if the August forecast shows supply 10 percent above normal, subject to two thirds approval.

Geneva July 11 The first annual report by John C Winant as director of the International Labor Office warns that current arms spending accelerates production shifts from productive to non productive sectors increases military service and burdens public finances provoking inflation and hardship for lower income groups The report frames the present armed peace as a form of economic waste comparable to war retreating from human needs and demanding international action to prevent starvation and deterioration of living standards.
The body of Michael Barnes, missing since last Wednesday night, was discovered yesterday at the base of a 75 foot cliff near Green Island Iowa. Barnes was a former Green Island station agent and later a Milwaukee railway bridge tender at Sabula.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee moved to shelve the neutrality measure for this session dealing with embargo provisions. The action dealt a setback to the administration and raised the possibility that Congress would wind up within two weeks, deferring all neutrality until the next session. Two Democrats opposed to the president’s purge allied with opposition.
Frank Parrish promotes tomorrow night parade with old time mounted guards and coaches. The event, after a concert, will feature bands, foot and horse entries, and hundreds of participants in period costumes marching from the six corner area. Local officials ask out of town guests to arrive early and street space be left clear along the sidewalk for procession.
Police report a freight train near Milwaukee was struck by stones while passing through town. No injuries reported as the train stopped within the east city limits and investigators searched the west end for suspects. Chief Brown cautions punishment for property endangerment if any rider was hit.
