Boone county auditor Charles Piper resigned following a board of supervisors requested audit that disclosed a $1382 discrepancy in the auditor's office funds. The report notes the financial irregularity prompting his stepping down.
In Fort Dodge the body of a boy identified as Robert Novak was recovered from the Des Moines River near the dam by firemen. His parents Mr and Mrs Harry Novak, farmers, reported in the afternoon that he had not returned home after going out to play. Police located several witnesses who saw him wading in the stream and investigators began the search.
Ray Brown age 15 of Montrose died after being crushed beneath a tractor at his father’s farm. He had been driving the machine when a rabbit ran across the field and, as he climbed down while it still moved, his clothing became caught. His father tried to halt the tractor but could not.
The agriculture department estimated the 1939 corn crop at 2,570,795,000 bushels in Washington D C. Des Moines reported a forecast of 445,490,000 bushels by Leslie M Carl, federal agricultural statistician.
Robert Risk of the Risk Construction company said rain-free weather could let the crew finish paving the North Second avenue underpass by Tuesday night. They are surfacing Last Fifth street at its intersection with North Second avenue just north of the underpass. Massman Construction has about two weeks of work left on the underpass contract before the state highway commission maintenance department takes over to sod slopes and beautify the site.
Walter Stevenson of Quincey Lil paid $14 for passing a stop sign at the intersection of roads 92 and 218 east of Ainsworth. The crash with Harry Millar of Ainsworth caused considerable damage and injuries to a small child. Officer Powers filed the report. Stevenson forfeited a $14 bond before Justice Bovee instead of a hearing.
Four Tri-T club members will offer tokens or pocket-pieces for sale in downtown booths on the square. Mrs. Rose Reid announces the plan to augment the illuminated fountain fund with 25 cent tokens, with higher gifts accepted. Booths will be staffed by Mrs. Raymond Dayton Mrs. Bob Lytle Mrs. H. M. Putnam and Miss Lucy Dempsey in period costumes. Sales run from six o'clock to after the Municipal band concert. Donations so far include three dollars from outside Washington: Mrs. W. L. Eichelberger of Okee Wis C. C. Jones of Oskaloosa and the Merry Mixers club of West Chester.
Mrs. Helen Baker Wallerich 24 died Sunday morning in University hospital Iowa City from bronchial pneumonia and complications. Funeral Tuesday at 2 pm L A Jones funeral home Washington with W J Stevens of Foursquare Gospel church in charge. Burial Elim Grove cemetery. She was born July 34 1914 in Pilotsburg and lived in Talleyrand. survived by husband Elmer, son Charles, parents Mr. and Mrs. Baker, sister Clara Goodwin, brothers Raymond Keith Richard, paternal grandmother Mare Dora Grimestead, and one deceased daughter Judith Anne.
Ned Brookhart of Washington has been confirmed into the State Department foreign service, class seven, at $4,000 annually. He retains duties and salary comparable to the Commerce Bureau since London remains his station, now with retirement and pension eligibility and protection from administration change. The move follows the president’s government reorganization moving Foreign Commerce officers to the State Department.
Chief Jay Brown announced 23 persons were ticketed Saturday and Sunday for parking over an hour near stores around the square. About two thirds were local, others from outside town. Officials say enforcement will improve the parking situation and public benefit, noting drivers fail to pull to the yellow line and violate the no U turn rule.
Mrs. Ralph Borman departed this morning for Denison to spend a few days with Frieda White.
United Automobile Workers massed about 700 pickets at Fisher Body plant gates in Pontiac Michigan forcing closure with no violence. About 50 police on hand as some workers crossed lines or left while authorities avoided forced barriers. In Washington an SI bill to raise hourly wake for skilled relief workers was introduced amid WPA strike pressure demanding prevailing wages.
Revival services will be held every evening this week starting at 7 45. Congregational singing opens each night with special duets of old time gospel songs by Rev and Mrs Sutton. A surprise feature by the evangelist awaits those attending tonight. City churches are well represented and the public is urged to attend.
The last kangaroo court and whisker sunbonnet parades will end Wednesday evening in a festive finale drawing many locals. Surprises are promised as clubs urge members to join, with a six horse stagecoach and pioneer costumes featured on the parade route. A Chicago trip doubleheader on July 30 is selling out fast. 50 tickets remain, contact Art Ruebsam, Ray Whitehead, or Al Goddard to reserve.
Attendance for the second July August union service in Central Park rose by four more attendees. Rev. Carl W. Klein of the Evangelical and Reformed church preached on The Assurance of a Road with a Christian path to peace and success. The Washington Concert band performed a sacred concert before and during the service. The third service is set for next Sunday in the park or the Presbyterian church if rain delays.
The Sunbonnet Club reports membership above 300 after a weekend surge as members wear quaint costumes on city streets. Donations from three men, William Matucha Keith Sweet and W B William, aid the cause. New members include Mreath Thorne Elizabeth Thorne Mra Jesse KHusby Neda Faye Axton Frances Flieher Eve lyn Kerr Martha Whittek er Margaret Gwen Brown and many others.
WPA laborers on city and county projects reject a 140 hours per month schedule. A mass meeting was held and they asserted they would not work today while protesting the change in administration hours.
All contestants in the Washington Centennial pageant and Washington's Heritage will gather with the queen’s committee and business managers Wednesday at 7 pm at the YMCA. Eligible candidates are unmarried women over sixteen who reside in Washington. The top vote getter will be Miss Washington, with Miss Columbia as runner up and eight attendants. The John B Rogers Producing Co will craft costumes for the ten winners and they will take on leading roles in the celebration including coronation ceremonies and a float in the Tarnmouth parade. The Miss Washington winner may choose a trip to New York World’s Fair or $50 in cash.
Organizers of the Centennial movement announce the first thirteen members of the Sons of Border group. Boys may join by paying a ten cent membership and will elect officers soon. Proceeds fund badges and a memorial fountain fund. Prime Minister Chamberlain told Parliament Britain is firmly resolved to honor its military aid guarantee to Poland amid tensions over Danzig. He noted Polish access to the sea and said no oppression of Danzig's populace exists under German rule, with administration in German hands.
The county 4H club plans a health contest on July 1 in the basement of a church. Examinations begin at 8:30 and run through the day with several stations to assess health metrics and local community participation.
The county 4-H club tour is scheduled for Friday with host families and county leadership guiding visits. Leaders Synder Re and Unity Agent will coordinate the itinerary and invite members to visit home hosts including Mrs. C W Stewart and Eva Deary as part of the week-long program.
