Welton, Iowa an inquest is set into the electrocution death of Donald Giesel 17 son of farmer John Giesel after he and his pony were fatally struck by a live power line blown down in a storm authorities report.
Marshalltown report notes $115 missing from the Clean Towel Service till after a funds check. A night theft is suspected as a drawer lock was broken during the incident. The matter prompts police and company review of security.
Elmer Carlson of Audubon, 1935 national cornhusking champion, files in Waterloo district court seeking 1702.50 as payment for 205 bushels of hybrid corn. He claims supplying corn at prices from 4.25 to 7 dollars per bushel to Strayer seed farms of Hudson.

Clarinda voters will go to the polls on July 27 to decide if the city should build a municipal hospital and issue bonds totaling 66 000. The measure would be financed by a levy not to exceed 14 mills on all taxable property.
Shippers from Muscatine oppose the Clinton Muscatine and Davenport Railroad Company plan to abandon tracks on the Muscatine division at a joint Iowa Commerce Commission and Interstate Commerce Commission hearing. No decision is expected for three to four weeks.
Iowa City reports about 4 000 campus students already enrolled in the University of Iowa summer session with an expected 8 to 10 percent rise over 1937. Assistant registrar Charles H. Maruth notes graduate enrollment ends this final week for credit. Including all state music and speech groups, total nears 3 200 with final figures due within 10 days. Classes end August 5.
A committee led by Claus L. Anderson seeks to form an organization to buy the Stanton home buildings and land. The Iowa Lutheran Conference operated the facility for over 59 years as an art home, but it closed last week and the resident children were moved to other institutions across the state.
Bartlett Iowa a 102 resident town in Fremont county faced rising Missouri River floodwaters this afternoon as water backed into the Mills Fremont drainage ditch. CCC workers fought to strengthen the dike while concerns grew the main river channel could shift toward the town. The river the highest since 1881 due to heavy week long rains forced residents from homes and disrupted Burlington line service near Bartlett.
Irving H. Knudson of Jewell was elected chair of the state highway commission at its Ames annual meeting. A former state senator and representative, he is a Republican who succeeds Curtis L. McKinnon of New London. Knudson was appointed to the commission in 1935 for a four year term through July 1, 1939.
The Cedar Chips Boys 4H Club will meet Monday at eight o clock at Marion Timmins home in Lexington. All members and interested boys are urged to attend as plans are made for the aerial 4H Club show in August.
John Wingert from Iowa State College will lead two demonstrations on home flower arrangement at county meetings. Sponsored by farm women, the sessions cover selecting colors, containers, and arranging with harmony. Attendees will bring flowers and a container to make up a arrangement.

Frank Pierce Randall 84 died at his Sigourney home after a long illness. He suffered a stroke about three years ago and had been bedfast recently. Survived by wife two sons Carl Hutchinson Kansas and George Waukegan IL two daughters Ruth Kurtz Cedar Rapids and Harold Hanson Sigourney.
The Agriculture Department said it cost Washington County farmers 14625.99 to administer local expenses of the AAA program from July 1, 1936 to February 28, 1937. Local committee men and farmer fieldmen received most of the funds as compensation for administering the 1936 Adjustment program. National and state figures show Iowa’s local admin costs at 4.8 percent of benefit payments, with thousands of local volunteers involved.
In the latest figures the total cost amounts to 19,409,514 dollars nationwide and 1,261,615 dollars within Iowa, detailing substantial expenditure across the U.S. and state. The figures reflect the scale of advertising spending reported by the Iowa Daily Press Association.
County Agent W. J. Roudabush said that while past two years showed large hopper populations, conditions this spring and early summer may limit a damaging invasion. Bodies of four of the nine presumed dead after the locomotive explosion and wreck of an east bound Northern Pacific train were recovered from Hell's Gate canyon 27 miles east of Missoula. In Davenport Iowa July 8 three Chicago youths Eugene Dean 19 Leonard Robinson 18 and Stanley Krevek 18 were captured after one snatched 600 dollars worth of diamond rings from Scheff jewelry store. Robinson confessed to stealing watches from George P Hauser store in Iowa City the day before.

Mrs. N. N. Mackie about 50 of Chicago died in a Billings hospital shortly after a Northwestern Airlines twin motor Zephyr crashed on takeoff from the Billings airport en route Seattle to Chicago. Passenger Mrs Vilet Tindale of British Columbia was injured. The plane was demolished with the tail mashed and engines torn loose into Coulee Canyon 75 feet deep.
Helen Holden visits Davenport to spend a day with brother Edgar Holden and Mrs Holden. She plans to depart for Chicago aboard the Rocket to stay several days with her uncle and aunt Mr and Mrs H W Ramsdale.
Rev. Jacob De Koning has served 13 years in South Dakota and Iowa as a missionary for the American Sunday School Union. He organized 89 Sunday schools, opened 24 preaching stations, held 81 daily Vacation Bible schools, and organized four churches. He distributed 670 Bibles and 366 Testaments, 598 Gospels and 4,836 tracts, delivered 2,149 sermons, wrote 11,492 letters, made 21,469 home visits, and traveled 201,296 miles. Mrs. De Koning aided with solos, Sunday schools, Vacation Bible schools, and children’s work.
