Lytton Wilbert Kreft, 38, died at his father's farm when a heavy hay fork toppled and crushed his skull as family members helped store freshly cut hay. He was dead on arrival, and others nearby summoned aid.
A Fort Madison man 65 named William Naylor died in a Monday motor vehicle crash near Mediapolis. The incident raised the official highway accident toll to 184, though several death reports are still pending with the state motor vehicle department.
Prof. F. T. Mavis head of mechanics and hydraulics at the State University of Iowa was chosen chairman of the civil engineering division of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education at its annual meeting in College Station Texas.
Madalynne Field, 31, Los Angeles, and Walter Lang, 39, Beverly Hills, motion director for Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corp., Hollywood, were married in the Little Brown Church in the Vale by Rev. William Kent. They were unattended.
Dubuque city council acts to reduce tavern numbers by denying new permits and using existing permit fees. There are 157 tavern permits in the city. A permit costs 100 dollars.
Mrs Jennie Brown 54 dies in University hospital after an auto crash in Johnson county near Wellman. Her husband Clarence Brown 52 dies of a broken neck before hospital arrival. Mrs Brown suffered a dislocated vertebra and broken legs in the crash.
Cars driven by Edward Green and Alfred Wallin collided at a dirt road intersection seven miles east of Essex. Wallin died of injuries shortly after, Green sustaining critical injuries. Passersby rushed them to Shenandoah and Red Oak facilities. Green is father of Florence Green the Iowa brain derby champion.
The C I U union unanimously rejected Governor Kraaschel's call to resume work at the Maytag Co washer plant with a 10 percent wage cut. It proposed Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Sager appoint a fact finding commission to probe the long labor dispute. William Sentner of St Louis, eighth district CIC president, was arrested in Jasper county on criminal syndicalism charges.
Postmaster General James A Farley announced the Aug 24 sale of a 3 cent Iowa centennial stamp to mark the state fair opening in Des Moines. The design resembling the old state capitol in Iowa City awaits final proof and will be purple. A dedication ceremony is planned.
In Newton Iowa CIO leaders face new arrests as the Maytag washing machine plant strike intensifies. Will Longreen and Hollis Hall were charged with kidnapping and syndicalism after an incident June 23. Bond set at 2000 and 5000 dollars respectively. Additional arrests promised as grand jury indictments loom.
Washington recorded a dramatic weather change with temperatures at 96 degrees before a storm. Rain accumulated 1.33 inches total with a 29 degree drop to 67, and winds were strong but damage reports limited to Mt. Pleasant New London area where poles and trees fell. Kalona saw about three inches of rain.
At a letting yesterday evening the contract for a new rural school in the Egypt district Jackson township was awarded to Eclipse Lumber Co of Kalona for 2162 dollars. Six bids ranged to 2995 dollars from bidders in Kalona Washington Ainsworth Wayland and Riverside. The frame school 20 by 28 feet will have a vestibule entrance basement furnace and seats for about 25 pupils. Construction must start at once and be finished by August 25. The district recently voted a 1690 dollar bond issue. The old building will be sold July 14. Don Beng returned to his work in Oskaloosa after visiting his mother.
Reconstruction work begins at the Kyle residence 302 West Second Street owned by Misa Carrie and Misa Jean Kyle. The project focuses on the second story renovation and related improvements.
The project assigns Nick Roth to carpentry, Ralph Minick to masonry, and Ivan Norton to install an oil heating system, bathroom fittings, and other plumbing, heating, and air conditioning fixtures.
Washington to host a district committee meeting Monday to set time and place for the district convention to nominate a successor to Congressman Er. C. Eicher, who withdrew. Candidates include Jamar Foster West Branch Will Hart Iowa City and James P. Gatinery Williamsburg plus possible Cedar county convention shift. Foster would quit the Iowa house if nominated. otherwise he stays on the ticket.
Frank Conchola aged 17 son of Mr and Mrs Martin Conchola of Letts was killed by a lightning bolt while walking across the Letts school lawn near the high school during a storm. Coroner Frank Jamison ruled the death, funeral arrangements set for Friday afternoon, and he leaves parents a brother and four sisters.
A southwest twister yesterday afternoon and a follow up windstorm this morning caused major damage in Brighton. Several houses, porches, and windows were damaged while trees were badly shattered and streets briefly blocked. Electric service was restored by evening. Nearby farms reported sheds blown down and a roof torn off a warehouse.
Donald Moore, a farm hand, was bound over to the district court yesterday by Justice of the Peace J. E. Bovee under $1,000 bonds on forgery charges. Moore, arrested in Algona, was brought to Washington by Sheriff H. M. Putnam and is alleged to have forged Walter Johnson’s name on a gasoline payment check.
Washington County Board of Supervisors voted to end the starling bounty effective July 15 as counties in the state curb payments. Since starting June 26 1937 the county paid 13 959 bounties at ten cents each, draining funds due to rising kills. A separate farming accident injured Earl Hopkins when a stack cover caused him to fall, resulting in a crushed hip and hospital treatment.
A special train car carrying 20 dangerous convicts departed Leavenworth for Alcatraz as part of a major transfer of federal prisoners from Atlanta and Leavenworth to the rock. Report says about half the inmates are leaders and agitators from Leavenworth annex.
Alf M. Landon digressed from his prepared speech in Council Bluffs to forecast an Iowa victory for Republicans this fall. He quipped that good rain yields good corn and, in turn, good corn makes good Republicans.
Washington July 7 AAA Administrator H R Tolley refused to end planting restrictions. Northwest spring wheat farmers urged elimination from 1949 wheat acreage limits. A 55,000,000 acre national allotment allocates benefits to compliant growers and supports wheat programs.
