Council staffs announce that depositors in the old First National bank, who have already received four percent, probably will get interest as well. Drayton W. Casady, receiver, stated there are favorable prospects that nine percent interest payments on 1,400,000 already paid out will be made.
Rock Rapids officials awarded a contract to W. Nystrom of Rock Rapids to wreck the 110-foot concrete chimney at the abandoned direct current light plant. Part of the old facility will be torn down and materials used to remodel the site into a garage for city trucks.
Deputy coroner Paul O Keefe returned no verdict of death by own action in the death of Louis Fressie 74 Dunkerton harness maker found dead in his shop with a bullet from a .32 caliber automatic revolver. Fressie had operated his business in Dunkerton for 48 years and left a note saying business is rotten Cant stand it any longer Too old to start something new.
Nine year old Robert Ackerman suffered severe burns to both legs when a car backfire ignited his clothing. Mechanic Peter Dunnington sustained burns on his hands chasing the boy and helping tear the flames from his clothes.
Des Moines area voters in Saylor township elect E. V. Atkinson for township clerk, a 29 year tenure beginning April 1909, establishing a county record for continuous service by an elective official in Volk County.
Sioux City Police Chief Ray Mahr, reviewing public enemy circulars, spotted a photo matching Frank Carman, 38, wanted for forgery in Idaho Falls. Mahr arrested Carman in his home and he is jailed awaiting extradition while Mahr claims a $200 reward.
A Des Moines taxi driver Fred Ellis was robbed by a gunman after a long ride. The bandit forced Ellis to surrender 11 cents and fled through the weeds, with police seeking the suspect.
West Chester reports fifth grade student Hilly Reif injured when a bee bee gun shot lodged near his optic nerve. He was hospitalized in Washington County and to be moved to University Hospital Iowa City for further treatment after X rays. The accident occurred on his grandfather Walter Fisher’s farm as Billy played with the toy gun while his father operated a corn sheller.
Dispatcher notes heavy combat along the Yangtze with Japanese lines advancing upstream. 52 American citizens are endangered as consuls are urged to evacuate nationals between Hukow and Whanggshikane. Kiukiang holds ten Americans, while Monocacy and Cockchase stand by.

Attendance at the central community playground over the first four weeks totals 3246 with an average of about 140 daily last week amid two rainy days. Enrollment nears 400 with 187 boys and 207 girls. many unregistered participants attend. Next Thursday features visitors day with crafts displays and various sports. special attendance awards will honor top performers. J E Palmer a carnival employee was brought from Victor Iowa on charges of non payment of a hotel bill and obtaining money under false pretenses linked to a carnival advertising scheme. A hearing before Justice J E Bovee resulted in Palmer's release after he agreed to settle obligations in Washington and pay costs.
R. R. Noonan district court clerk announces a transcript of the divorce decree in the Hinshaw suit against Alda F. Hinshaw. The decree was granted in Muscatine county court while Alda Hinshaw was in California and did not contest the case.
Surging Missouri river flood waters broke through a drainage levy north of Bartlett, Iowa, forcing additional evacuations. CCC workers labored to repair the break while nearby farmers rushed to save stored grain in the lowlands.
Sheriff Putnam's office wrestled with whether the fatal crash that injured Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Brown occurred in Washington or Johnson county. A three county line crash in Bremer, Payette, and Chickasaw counties was ultimately placed half a mile into Johnson county. Coroners from all three counties investigated as Highway Patrol Sgt. Faber noted hopes to improve records in Washington and reduce fatal accidents in his West Liberty area.
Newton July 9 strong hand of state government seized reins in the Maytag plant strike to ease tension. Governor Kraschel ordered a three man arbitration board and barred unlawful assembly while 1500 workers face a ten percent wage cut. CIO members withdrew from the plant as mass picketing was enjoined.
Wayne Sharpe aged 44 formerly of Washington died suddenly of a heart attack in Mason City. He was a telegrapher by trade. survived by wife Sarah Dunn McArthur, two daughters Lenora and Joan, two step-daughters Jean and Marjorie, and six siblings including Mrs. Wotruba and Mrs. Kendrick of Washington. Funeral plans are pending with services expected in Mason City.
Des Moines reports 457 primary candidates for state offices spent an average of 159.02 dollars seeking public office. With 427 reporting, total expenditures reached 72673.12 dollars for offices from state representative to U.S. senator. Nine candidates spent over a thousand dollars.
Secretary Leigh W. Soule and Mrs. Soule will depart tomorrow for Lake Geneva Wisconsin to attend a YMCA conference. They then plan a driving tour through New England into Canada and expect to return about August first.
