A Nashua column recounts little Jerry Caldwell, 3, swallowing a tack while playing with bread. The tack became lodged in his throat, prompting concern for the boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Caldwell.
Sioux City report says Steven Serdinsky, 38, fell from a second floor window of his home when a screen hook opened. He protested being kept in the hospital for observation, and doctors found no injuries.
Robert Wilson, 20, drowned in Lake Manawa while canoeing with companion Doland Parks, 20. A cross wind capsized the canoe sending both into the water, Parks body and Wilson were rescued by rescue crews after Parks struggled to save him.
The United States will drop charges against five individuals linked to a $300,000 secret commission deal in the merger of the Modern Brotherhood of America and the Independent Order of Foresters of Toronto. Announcement came from William B. Danforth, assistant U S attorney, noting four MBA officers and a Chicago broker.

In Manchester Iowa a 48 year old mother, Mrs. Meader, died trying to save her 15 year old son Roger Meader who slipped into the Maquoketa river while minnows were being sought. He clung to her, and they both sank. Witnesses reported the heroism and tragedy of the rescue attempt.
Harvey Weat Jr was severely shocked but not seriously hurt while assisting in firing a display at River Front park Keokuk. One shell misfired sending him into the Mississippi River where rescuers later pulled him from the water.
Strikers reject Kraschel's proposal and IS working on a two day program for August 17 and 18 for Legion Days. Leon Beatty post of the American Legion sets dates, with a meeting at the Legion rooms establishing a definite plan. Location undetermined but likely at the old fair grounds or Kendrick field three miles southwest. General chairman Carl Voorhees leads a committee including Howard Miller, Bill Kendrick, George Baker and Ives McKay. Events include tin can derby with old Model Ts, animal races, horse show, airplanes, acts, balloon ascent or parachute drop, plus a dance pavilion, concessions and rides. Committees cover derby, concessions, parking, advertising. A meeting next Tuesday will advance planning. event aims to raise funds for Legion enterprises and services.

The nine weeks old strike again stalled as 700 CIO supporters blocked reopening efforts and a group of 150 back to work adherents withdrew amid threats. Fire under boilers failed to spark work resumption as officials sought troops and kept mass picketing injunctions. Mayor Campbell and Sheriff discussed plans, authorities declined to reveal them, while Kraschel warned workers to return.
A Delta driven car and a Curran company truck collided on East Washington Street near the city limit. Ed Reed sustained a bruised shoulder and a light head abrasion, while others escaped injury. The Delta car and the truck both received damage, with more damage to the front of the Delta vehicle.
