Later notes report brief consciousness and artificial respiration with chloral sleep aids as the pope shows moments of wakefulness.

Brown lies mortally wounded in Knox county jail guarded by deputies. doctors say death could come within hours. Reverend Kelly provides spiritual comfort as Brown denies a Colorado mining murder sentence.

Leadville Colorado reports a rare July snow event with a white mantle blanketing the city and surrounding mountains, with two to three inches observed on the high country.

Weather aided distribution, agriculture buoyancy, railways earnings up, pig iron output higher, fewer insolvencies, and rising inquiries for pig iron. Structural material moves freely despite labor limits and footwear firms report strong fall orders.
How ard Roberts and Private Clara Miller of the Volunteers of America sini aided an elopement escape from disapproving parents. They hurried from Burnston to Chicago then to Waukegan where the ceremony was performed after sidestepping Captain Joe Dowell who pursued them. The 18 year old bride resisted Captain Jonel in opposing marriage.
In Sioux City Iowa on July 4 Geo Talema was tarred and feathered by 290 villagers over rumored improper relations with another man’s wife. The mob, though large, remained orderly as the deed occurred in the business district. Talema was arrested but released after the judge declared him sufficiently punished.
Jeffersonville July 4. Joseph P. Byers, superintendent of the Jeffersonville reformatory, handed in his resignation which was accepted by the board of managers. W. J. Whittaker of Indianapolis was elected to succeed him. Clinton July 4. Hils Hanson, postmaster of Almont, shot farm hand George Lashelle. Hanson surrendered and bail was posted as Lashelle faces likely death.
Washington reports that Commander Barnett of the General Board will lead inspections of the naval militia in Illinois and Michigan this month at the request of the respective state governors.
