July reports describe Pope Leo undergoing a nonanesthetic procedure to remove pleural fluid. Dr Magzant used a Pravaz needle with suction to drain the chest, yielding swift relief and renewed vitality as the pontiff slept calmly.
A Rome bulletin at 8:30 p.m. reports the pope remains satisfactorily steady with slow circulation and breathing but gradual improvement. The LAPPONS dispatch notes the pope taking more nourishment, preferring yolk and small sips of brandy as strength is hoped to be maintained.
In Linton Indiana on July 8 eight Terre Haute African Americans attended a banquet at a new Elks lodge. An audience engaged in a demonstration, and catering was provided by Alex Sanderson of Terre Haute with his staff. The men narrowly escaped danger as the event unfolded.
Mrs Gust Moser of Ovando Deerlodge Co Montana reports eleven years of female weakness. After two unsuccessful operations she used Dr Pierce's Favorite Prescription and Golden Medical Discovery for three months and regained health. Lebanon July 4 reports Marshall Funck city solicitor and noted local lawyer died by hanging in his office. Police say he used his own belt to take his life in a shocking end to his troubled state. Details indicate no foul play suspected.

Adrian Michigan July 8 Dester 1 Salsbury aged 63 is dead Colonel Salsbury enlisted in the Second Michigan infantry and served through the civil war. At Gettysburg a bullet went through his lungs, and this wound helped cause his death. He was a prominent southern Michigan lawyer and partner of John J O Mealey for over thirty years. He supported the Democrats and twice accepted nominations for Congress. Surviving family include the widow, his brother Levi of this city and his sister Mrs John Allen of Devil's Lake.
In Louisville in July Judge Evans ordered J M McKnight the former bank president to be shipped to Atlanta to serve a six year sentence. After four decades of legal delays and five trials with four verdicts against him the case stems from the wrecking of the German National bank. His supporters claim the bank was insol vent before his tenure. Also noted are two fatal train incidents in Oak Grove and Byberry Philadelphia involving multiple fatalities and a murder suicide theory.
The official forecast through 8 PM calls for fair weather in Illinois Indiana Wisconsin and Iowa with warm temperatures and brisk southerly winds. Lower Michigan should be generally fair and warm with fresh to brisk southerly winds.
A head on collision between passenger train No 85 and local freight No 6S at Rockfish Virginia killed twenty three people and injured nine. The crash wrecked both engines and several cars while one coach carried many colored passengers.

Sixty July &-Thomas Wedmore owner of a ferry on the Missouri at Sloan fell from his flatboat into the river and after swimming a half mile sank in sight of a boat load of passengers unable to help him. He was 28 years old and a champion swimmer.
St Louis July 8 John H Carroll general attorney for the Burlington was taken before the grand jury investigating bribery in the state legislature and refused to answer several questions asked by Circuit Attorney Folk. The circuit attorney sought a court order to compel further testimony.
In a courtroom a judge sustains Carrolls claim that answering certain questions could incriminate him. Judge Douglas orders one question answered. The four questions cover payments to John A. Lee and money paid to legislators in Jefferson City and St. Louis and payments by others. Carroll replies he has no knowledge of money used by others to influence legislation.
Denver reports link between a string of stranglings. Mabel Brown at 1991 Market Street died in her bedroom with evidence of a struggle and red marks on her hands. Earlier, Mrs Antoine Kenhan was killed at 2121 Sixteenth Street. Police warn the same killers may weave a deadly pattern through the city blocks.

Milwaukee dispatch reports 76 year old John Henle struck while crossing a street in Mauwatora. He died at county hospital. Driver fled the scene and is not identified.

Henry Voec ker man administrator for William J Gibson estate of Vincennes sues Rev J Clay Yates a Cumberland Presbyterian minister and cousin of Governor Yates for persuading the old man to transfer $15000 in Gibson's estate during a revival. A second suit for $15000 is filed in Salem Marion county alleging a farm belonging to Gibson was secured by Yates.
News briefs report Ambassador Count Cassini saying he will return to Washington in September despite rumors. A separate item notes the Russian relation improving with the U.S. A farmer Meury Anachutz found dead by hanging on his Scales Mound farm. Nine Kalamazoo paper mills planned a one week shutdown for stock readjustment and worker rest. Navy officials report two American stragglers at Kiel.
