Fourth of July Becomes Townwide Crisis and Rescue Tales
Our Chicago Bureau reports a string of incidents from July Fourth inspired by patriotism. Sylvan Alexander, 12, snatched 50 cents from his father’s wallet to buy fireworks and faced a warrant and jail. Pearl Slade and Lizzie Sage, hungry after wandering Lincoln Park, sought help from police after sleepless hours and hunger. Firefighter Frank Woman and Dr. V A Farrell saved Mrs. Gandz from a burning home. Tommy Peterson’s collie Scot saved him from drowning, but the dog was killed after the boy’s mother reported a vicious dog. Walter Horn, 14, in a wagon accident, suffered a fractured skull. The city saw subdued revelry and fewer casualties despite earlier warnings.
