J M McCormick, frail veteran, faced a revolver and warned he would tell the coroner’s inquest about the gang leader killed by a policeman. The Newsboys’ ally Captain Dewey, a city special policeman, is mourned after ten years protecting the Waterville levee youth.
Miss Nita Lemon of San Bernardino fought a sword duel with a French beggar and chased him away after pinking him. The incident occurred amid a string of odd happenings across California and New York in a period paper.
Pittsburg reports a joint conference planned early in the week between United States Steel companies and Amalgamated workers to end the strike over union control at hoop and sheet plants. Officials say a settlement is likely, and a general stoppage affecting 80,000 could occur if talks fail. Also noted is a large funeral procession with Michigan’s governor in attendance for former Governor Pingree.
Rail yard workers in East St. Louis ended a strike after railway companies granted a 15 cent daily wage increase. About 500 drivers who struck in sympathy voted to return, accepting lower pay scales of 1.50 for pickers and 1.40 for truckers, effective July first if no action had occurred. Only essential workers will be recalled to fill vacancies.
A three hour conference in Telluride Colorado yields a pact between Manager Collins and the Smuggler Union. The agreement bars discrimination against union men, continues the contract system, and allows measurement of work. If miners earn less than three dollars daily they may be discharged for incompetency or have contract pay adjusted to reach three dollars. The union secretary may be present on grounds with no interference.
Warsaw Indiana July 8 Dr J Wilbur Chapman evangelist and Winona Bible conference director lies in critical condition at his summer home. Dr Schoonover in charge offers little hope but aims to pull him through angina pectoris is the diagnosed ailment.
Sioux Falls notes attorney A B Kittredge among likely successors to late United States Senator James H Kyle. The former Republican national committeeman from South Dakota and local lawyer is favored as the probable new senator amid current state politics.
Hazen S Pingree former Michigan governor was buried Saturday afternoon at Elmwood Cemetery Detroit following a citywide funeral. Bells tolled as the cortege moved through lined streets with crowds gathering to pay respects after 6 pm.
New York July 8 Pierre Lorillard died yesterday afternoon at 2 10. Funeral is set for 11 o clock Wednesday from Grace Church with interment at Greenwood. Eldest son of Peter Lorillard he inherited about 1 000 000 and part in the tobacco firm. He expanded the family fortune and in 1874 entered turf racing. His great horse Iroquois won the 1881 English Derby the first US citizen to do so with a locally bred horse. He was a noted yachtsman who sailed Vesta across the Atlantic.
In Owosso Michigan an 18 month old child of Harry Freeman wandered from the yard. The child was found head first in a post hole filled with water after a family search. The incident occurred while the parents were in the rear yard.
Log boom at the mouth of the Fire Steel river broke free scattering about a million feet of pine logs in Lake Superior. The timber, belonging to C V McMillan & Bro of Ontonagon, is likely unrecoverable and the loss is set to reach ten thousand dollars.
In Paris Illinois on July 8 Everett Whalen 15 while celebrating the Fourth with a revolver shot and killed Lula Mullinix 12 the daughter of farmer John Mullinix five miles south of the city Lula Mullinix was Whalen’s aunt’s child and niece to the shooter.
Mattoon Illinois reports the Union Broom Supply company has cornered the broom corn crop of 1900 and raised prices to 120 dollars a ton. Three hundred tons in a Paris warehouse have been sold to manufacturers. Death of Humenlohe noted.
Berlin reports the death of Prince von Hohenlohe former German chancellor in Ragatz Switzerland last Friday evening. He left Berlin ill earlier but appeared in good health before his exhaustion. The death is attributed to old age and plans for burial at Schillingsfurst Bavaria are not finalized. He was born March 31 1819.
A Detroit crowd mobbed Meiko Meyer a metal polisher after he insulted ex Gov Pingree on Campus Martius. Jimmie Schaeffer struck him, police intervened, Meyer and Schaeffer were escorted to the station and released. Meyer's injuries were described as serious with alleged inadequate police protection.
Oklahoma City reports that Indians threaten injunctive action to halt the opening of Kiowa Comanche and Apache lands by President McKinley’s proclamation. C Porter Johnson to represent the tribes. Judge Irwin may issue orders restraining land office officials and homeseekers. Proclamation opens lands Aug 9 under homestead laws.
The Constitution scored an unqualified victory over the Independence in the Newport Yacht Racing association series. The Herreshoff built craft beat Columbia by over eight minutes in the 15 mile downwind run and finished more than seven miles ahead at the line. Corrected times show Constitution ahead of Columbia by nine minutes fifty eight seconds with Columbia seventy seven seconds behind.
A July storm in Neenah and Menasha brought wind, rain, and lightning. Numerous small buildings were toppled, and church spires were struck with damage to St Marys and St Johns Polish Church, including a bolt carving a path down the steeple.
In Milwaukee July 8 a gas line tank exploded in the cellar of William EK Fitzgerald’s country house at Lake Nagawicka. Fitzgerald died at noon yesterday after severe burns and his coachman William Grunwald was reported in a dying condition. Fitzgerald led the Milwaukee Dry Dock company and the American Shipbuilding company.
James Ryburn of Bloomington found dead in alley near East Alton. Thomas Johnson arrested in St Louis after pawn shop buyer linked him to Ryburn’s watch. Johnson says quarrel during a card game led to a blow with an iron rod. he claimed self defense and did not know Ryburn died until arrest.
The only name linked to the comptroller of the currency post to succeed Mr. Dawes is George K. Roberts of Iowa, current director of the U S mint. Trusted by the President and Treasury, Roberts is noted for financial writings and was appointed as mint director without solicitation. He is currently in San Francisco.
Carrie Nation visited Terre Haute Indiana for three hours. She toured several saloons, confronted Mayor Steeg who was at a saloon, and refused to leave when accosted. A crowd gathered as Steeg tried to eject her. A saloonkeeper gave whisky which she smashed on the sidewalk with her hatchet.
Snow fell in Troughton and Calumet on Saturday morning. The Quincy Wis were white with it early, but it soon melted away.
In New Orleans July death of J R G Pitkin former postmaster and ex minister to Argentina is believed to be suicide despite coroner certifying natural causes. A laudanum bottle found in his room. Pitkin had faced public humiliation after resignation and had a long record of patriotic activity and Fourth of July orations.

In Waukegan Illinois on July 8 a railroad grader camp near Round Lake was quarantined after smallpox outbreaks. A laborer J Crawford contracted the disease and contractor FP Johnson showed varlloid. Reported quarantine followed prior attempts to escape a Wisconsin camp. Madeira California also reports a double murder suicide with John Garner shooting his wife and mother in law before killing himself.
Bees swarmed the graveside at Salem graveyard near Kokomo Indiana during a burial led by Undertaker Dimmitt. The panicked mourners fled as thousands of bees attacked the crowd and the sexton only returned after dark to fill the grave.
